Ginevra Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I really want to take my old Mac Desktop in to the Genius Bar at Apple and just have them bring it totally up-to-date. I want (need) to run Microsoft programs on there; I think this is possible, but the thing is just so old. When I first got it, it ran iWork for programs that were similar to Word and Excel, but now iWork does not even run on that computer. I can't even access my old documents that were typed and saved on there; they are ghosted. Do anyone know if they do this? Quote
Guest Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I think because I don't want them to tell me I need to buy a new Mac. 2 Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 My experience is that my local store is willing to do more than what the apple retail store terms and conditions say that they can do if I come in at a slow time, and if they realize that we have 8 devices in our family, with the likelihood of buying additional ones in the next year. I'd approach it from the position that you want to be able to access old information. Quote
Kebo Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I just had my 7 year old MacBook brought into good condition with a new hard drive. The Genius Bar wouldn't work on it (it's an "antique"!), and Apple no longer makes parts for it, but they referred me to an outside business who will work on older Apple products, if they have the needed parts available to them. I would imagine things work similarly for a desktop. The business I went to is called MacMedia. 1 Quote
Annie G Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 We have a store called Simply Mac and they are Apple partners. They have been GREAT with us. We don't even bother with the Apple store now. They're not all snooty when you bring in an old mac and want it worked on. When my Macbook was like three years old I needed some minor service and the Apple tech rolled his eyes at me. Hey, I raised four teenagers and I didn't need HIS sass! Maybe there is an Apple partner near you. Or maybe the techs at your genius bar are nicer than ours. g 1 Quote
Paula in MS Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Once Macs get to be a certain age, they can't be updated because they don't support the new software. That's the case form my 2010 desktop. I can just use what is on here because it is too old to update further. Same thing with my ipad. 1 Quote
catz Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 We have an original iPad and it can't be updated. I would think you probably cannot update to the latest and greatest if it's too old. It's a marketing scam to have the technology turn over like it does and Apple gets you worse than others! 1 Quote
