workingmom Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Anyone use MIT open courseware for their science classes? We actually just reallylooked at it yesterday to help DS with a Chem topic he's studying for the SAT CHEM subject test. Its really well put together with lectures, notes and even exam questions and solutions. Wondering has anyone used this an an online option for a core science course and how was it perceived from admissions people? Thanks 2 Quote
Mike in SA Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 We use it, but can't speak to admissions perceptions. I can't imagine anyone looking down on them - if you test at a level of rigor appropriate to the content you should be fine. There are only a couple of complete courses on the site, though. Bio, chemistry, math, and computer science are well represented. The best physics content went offline a couple of years ago, unfortunately. Quote
workingmom Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 Thanks MIKE, It looks like the intro physics is there and they also have it offered through EdX http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/physics/8-01-physics-i-fall-2003/ https://www.edx.org/course/advanced-introductory-classical-mitx-8-mechcx-0?utm_source=OCW&utm_medium=CHP&utm_campaign=OCW Quote

Thanks My oldest used MIT open courseware for both science and math his last two years of high school. They are great courses. 2 Quote

His courses were all removed. The new ones aren't bad - just aren't as complete yet. Look for the SC suffix on course numbers. They denote "scholar" courses that are completely self-contained. Those are absolutely brilliant. Quote
Rosepetal Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 (edited) @MikeinSA could you clear a bit that where is SC suffix for courses?EDX or MIT or Coursera?Any course code for example? Thanks. Edited April 25, 2016 by Rosepetal Quote

The others are very different programs. For example, look at the calculus sequence. They're also listed on a separate page at http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/ocw-scholar/ if you want to filter the other stuff out. 1 Quote
