freemanfamilyof6
Do my youngest is working through AAR. She is 6 in May. She was kinder age this year & finished AAR 1 and 1/2 of AAR2. She also started AAS1. I noticed there is no grammar in this program. Any suggestions on what to add in & when to start it?
Momto6inIN
We've used AAR thru level 4. We didn't do any grammar in 1st other than read some fun story type books about the parts of speech to introduce them. They're a series by Ruth Heller. Very cute. Then in 2nd we did Easy Grammar as a gentle intro to the subject. Next year we're starting First Language Lessons Level 3. Any of these are an easy supplement to AAR and AAS and only take about 10-15 minutes/day.
Vintage81
I'm going to be using AAR for my 1st grader, and then eventually AAS. We'll also be doing IEW PALS Writing. It includes handwriting practice, introductory grammar, and writing. The package also includes AAS 1, but I'm pretty sure you can order it without that if you already have. http://iew.com/shop/products/primary-arts-language-writing-complete-package IEW also has Fix It Grammar available. I'll be using that for my soon-to-be 3rd grader. http://iew.com/shop/products/fix-it-grammar-complete-package-6-teacher’s-manuals I haven't used Fix It yet, but I've read good things about it. Plus, the lessons are pretty quick, 10-15 minutes, which was appealing.
freemanfamilyof6
Thanks for the ideas. I'll look into IEW Pals. We use IEW for my older three, both writing & fixit grammar.
kalusignan
I use First Language Lessons alongside AAR and it works perfectly. Level 1 starts out very gently; each lesson taking about 15 minutes. I do skip a lot of the dictation exercises since we do those in AAS, but that's the only overlap.
RKWAcademy
For first, we did FLL & WWE along with AAR. Both are quick. My kids are loving WWE (we didn't start it until mid-year). FLL is the first thing to get dropped. Not a favorite around here but it's fine.
mamamoose
I love how gentle FLL is. My son is dyslexic and also loves it. It's repetitive and has a lot of poems to memorize and they are fun, too!
MerryAtHope
You might like this blog post on planning language arts. I typically worked on grammar informally at this age (gently restating what they said with correct phrasing and having them repeat, etc...). FLL is a gentle approach if you want to add in a curriculum though. Edited April 24, 2016 by MerryAtHope
Bay Lake Mom
I would continue with AAR and AAS. I would add copy work or a simple handwriting workbook a few times a week (not every day). I would also use BJU Engish 2 for the fall. I recently started using this. I've already bought level 3. It alternates chapters between grammar lessons and writing lessons. It gets done and we're learning.
ExcitedMama
What about adding in English Lessons Through Literature (ELTL)?
