Hagan Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Hi everyone my 6 year old daughter is just finishing off Teach Your Child to Read and we have purchased The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. I really want her to work through this book but I am concerned that we will confuse her. Has anyone had experience with these two books? Anyone got any recommendation about what we should do once she finishes Teach Your Child to Read? Am I going to mess up her reading forever? Any help at this point will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 1 Quote
ReadingMama1214 Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I don't have experience with Teach Your Child to Read, but we are using Ordinary Parents Guide with my 4.5 year old. I think I have seen it recommended to go from Teach Your Child to Read to OPG once you finished. I would assume you would just see where in OPG your daughter is and start there. It doesn't have the same markings as Teach Your Child, but it is a pretty thorough program. Maybe you could find copy of OPG at the library and see how it would work for you guys? Quote
HomeAgain Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 We used nothing after 100 EZ lessons. There is a list in the back of books and phonograms to introduce in order and that is very sufficient for a lot of kids before moving on to spelling. If you find the need to work through an additional phonics book, by all means do so, but I think you may be surprised. Quote
Kristie in Florida Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I'm not sure why you'd go through two different phonics programs, unless I'm missing something. Does OPG have things that 100EZ doesnt? Quote

I believe it goes to a higher reading level, but I'm not sure. It also has 200+ lessons, so I would think it hits on somethings that 100 EZ doesn't. Quote
Cake and Pi Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I think you could move from the end of 100EZ Lessons into OPGTR, but it would't be a straight jump. You'd probably want to start around lesson 92, but look through lessons 75-91, there might be a few lessons in there that your kiddo needs. It depends on how much she's osmosed, lol. (I'd look closely at 76, 77, 78, and 87.) There will be a few lessons after 92 that are review, but it's no big deal. Another option is to move into the Funnix reading program. It was designed by the same guy who wrote 100EZ Lessons. You'd want to do the placement test, but most likely she would place at the beginning of Funnix 2. My older two read from the list at the end of 100EZ Lessons and then just moved to reading books. After the list, they did Magic Tree House books and other stuff from the library. 1 Quote
Cake and Pi Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Oh, and at some point I got tired of trying to hunt down books at the right reading level, so I started going through lessons in the McGuffey Eclectic Readers with my older two. So there's another option. 1 Quote
Monica_in_Switzerland Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 We used phonics Pathways to shore up phonics (teach your child to read was def not enough for my dis) alongside the McGuffey readers. Quote
ElizabethB Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 (edited) It will be a good follow on, and should not cause confusion. Teach your child to read goes to the 1st grade level, OPG goes to the 3rd/4th grade level. Edited April 23, 2016 by ElizabethB 1 Quote

I had a similar question a while back. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. Quote
