lexi Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Ok I need some recommendations. I just had a baby a few weeks ago and I want to get back into exercising and lose the baby weight. I've been trying to go for walks with my kids but there is too much stopping/starting so it's not a good workout for me. I have a treadmill and I plan to walk and jog but that gets boring. So I thought I might try some workout DVDs. Any specific ones I should check out? I think I would like ones that focus on cardio and maybe some basic strength training. I have some free weights. My hubby might end up doing some of them with me but I'm not sure which ones he would enjoy also. Any other suggestions for trying to get back into shape? I'm trying to eat well and eat fairly low carb. Quote
redsquirrel Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 You could look on Fitness Blender. They have a channel on youtube as well. It is free, but you sometimes have to watch a commercial. DH and I liked it for trying things out. We did kettlebells and a few other things. They also have pilates etc. https://www.fitnessblender.com/ You don't have to join to use their videos so feel free to ignore that. And I've never paid for a workout schedule etc or anything like that. I haven't used it in a while, but I remember appreciating that it's not a hard sell. I do NOT like being marketed to, and I could live with what I saw. I mean, they are trying to make a living, right? I hope that hasn't changed. 1 Quote
Slache Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 (edited) I've lost about 100 pounds. Insanity Max 30 is the best thing out there for parents in my opinion. P90X is the best thing out there but it's an hour to an hour and a half a day and requires more equipment. Insanity Max 30 is fast and extremely effective. Whole 30 if you can afford it. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself. It was probably an extra $200 in groceries for both of us. I only lost 8 pounds but it made a huge difference in how I eat on a regular basis now. Buy a water bottle. I like this one. http://www.amazon.com/Ello-Syndicate-BPA-Free-Glass-Bottle/dp/B00BUTN4V2?ie=UTF8&keywords=glass%20water%20bottle&qid=1461252281&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4 I wash it every other day to prevent the mold problem mentioned in the reviews and have not had a problem. I also have a Brita water filter. My Jawbone fitness band taught me a lot about myself and helped me to live a healthier lifestyle. I did not want one with Bluetooth so I bought this one. http://www.amazon.com/UP-Jawbone-Medium-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00A17IAO0/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1461252382&sr=8-11&keywords=jawbone I got one in blue and my husband got one black and they both look good a year later. I want to try juicing but I'm not in a good place for that right now. Someone recently informed me that I should not be juicing while I'm breastfeeding because losing weight too quickly tends to push the toxins from your fat into your breast milk. I have had good luck in the past with the grapefruit diet. I don't think I've done it since I was a teenager, but I believe I lost about 15 pounds in a month. Make sure to invest in some good shoes and clothes for fitness. I like Asics shoes for indoor workouts because the gel insoles respond to constantly changing your movements. Other than that I pretty much buy men's basketball shorts and Champion sports bras. Edited April 21, 2016 by Slache Quote
Mom-ninja. Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 (edited) Honestly, keep everything low impact even if it's boring. You are still postpartum and if you start exercising more than easy low impact stuff you could start bleeding again or get mastitis. Walking, easy yoga, walking. How in shape were you before/during pg? That will make a difference as well. If you are brand new to exercise then you need to start even slower. In no way would I recommend you do any Beach Body programs right now. Maybe a year from now. 6 months at the earliest. I happen to *love* Fitness Blender. If you buy their scheduled programs (which you don't have to if you want to plan your own workouts) they are very affordable. They have some low impact schedules that would be great. You can also, of course, do a search for low impact (or anything level 2 and under) and put it into your planner. Fitness Blender would be best for you. But I'm totally biased as I pretty much only use their stuff anymore. Moms Into Fitness has a postpartum DVD, I think. I've never purchased her stuff (pricey) but you could check it out. Oh, as for the walking/jogging with little kids..... When I was in that stage I literally walked (or jogged) laps through my house while the kids played or followed me. I have stairs and would throw those in at times as well. Audio books are great for keeping the boredom at bay while walking/jogging. Also, turn on the music and dance. Dancing is great exercise and fun to do with kids. If you can't get down and boogie with your kids then you take yourself too seriously. ;) Edited April 21, 2016 by Mom-ninja. 4 Quote
Slache Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Sorry! I missed the few weeks ago commented! Don't do Insanity Max 30. I'm sorry. You could do that in January if you wanted. Beachbody does have lower impact programs, but for that you may as well buy something much less expensive. I really liked Tae Bo when I was postpartum. You could probably start that at 6 weeks and it costs about $10 at Target. In the beginning I could only do about 10 minutes and I just worked my way up until I had it mastered. After that I went to P90X but that was probably when my daughter was a year old. Quote
lexi Posted April 21, 2016 Author Posted April 21, 2016 Thanks. I do plan to take it easy and work into it slowly. I did exercise during pregnancy until I had SPD and basically couldn't function. But I do want to gradually work up to more exercise although it won't be high intensity for a while. I just need something to keep me on track. I know some exercise will make me feel better and help me make it through the long days of keeping up with 6 kids. 1 Quote
