ktgrok
So, IF I get my IUD out soon it will be with a hysteroscopy, because the stupid strings were too short and they dissapeared as soon as he put it in. So, yeah. When I talked to them about scheduling it no one said anything about getting a ride. I know that this doctor does a cervical block when putting an IUD in and is very good about pain management. I anticipate a cervical block for this. I can take a normal dose of advil before I go, but cannot take a prescription dosage because of my weight loss surgery (risk of ulcers). Do I need a ride, do you think? And if so, anyone used Uber? I hate to have my husband have to take time off work for it. Also, how bad is it? I have vicodin here, I could take one before I go, but shouldn't drive then I don't think. I'm leaning towards using Uber and taking a vicodin and advil. But...then I'm taking a ride in a car with someone I don't know while not entirely at my best. I have taken Vicodin many times for dental pain and it doesn't knock me out or make me loopy, just very happy. Warm, fuzzy, happy. I think it would be fine, but anyone have any thoughts? Otherwise it is drive myself (no vicodin) or have DH take an afternoon off work.
medawyn
I think I would be inclined to have DH or a friend drive me, just in case.
3 ladybugs
I have had 3 hysteroscopy procedures (all exploratory none were to remove anything) and the most I needed for pain was 2 extra strength advil. And I drove home after each of them. So I would assume since it isn't implanted, just put in your uterus right? That you may have a bit more pain but not much more. And I would think little to no bleeding. That has been my experience. I should also add that mine were all done on cycle day 3.
Daria
I have no experience with hysteroscopy bit tons with Uber. In fact I am in one right now! I would have no hesitation about taking uber in this circumstance. I have pretty consistently good experiences with them. The only really bad experience was a driver who put in the address wrong and so went the long way, but my son (the passenger in this case) still got to his destination and Uber forgave the whole charge. With Uber you will have the driver's name and tag number, which is pretty good protection. I would prefer to be able to make decisions about pain control without worrying about transportation so I vote again driving yourself. Acadie
I'd feel fine planning to take Uber home for something like this, but having a backup plan would be reassuring. Could you schedule it on an afternoon when dh or a friend could be on call, in case you'd prefer to ride with someone you know? Would it take long for dh to get there from work if you texted him after the procedure? Like Daria, I've had all good experiences with Uber. A couple drivers took longer than I'd have liked to show up, but were very decent people who had just started driving for Uber. At night sometimes I text dh when the ride begins, so he knows when to expect me home. If dh is available for texting that might make both of you feel more comfortable. Amy With my DS, we share an Uber app so I can watch him come home on my phone. I can literally see where he is at any moment. I try not to be a helicopter mom and use that feature without good reason, but I can! So, if you really worry you could have someone sign into your app and watch out for you. Good luck! I hope it for so easily that you laugh at the idea of needing Vicodin.
ktgrok
Thanks all! Yes, I could always call DH to come get me if need be, he'd leave work if he has to. It's just such a new job I hate to make him if he doesn't have to. Although he might insist. Who knows. And I'm pretty trusting, so not really worried, but I'm so trusting I didn't know if I SHOULD be worried, if that makes sense. I tend to leave doors unlocked, etc so I'm not always the best judge of risks.
ErinE
It took the doctor some time to get the IUD out (embedded a bit), and I was able to drive home afterwards. I took ibuprofen since the cramping was pretty uncomfortable. I don't think the pain rose to levels requiring Vicodin.
Ravin
I would prefer to have DH or a friend come get me. I had this happen as well, but my doctor removed the IUD right before doing uterine ablation, so I can't say how it would have felt with just the hysteroscopy to get the IUD out. Katy
I wished I'd taken Vicodin before mine. The cramping was no worse than bad menstrual cramps, but the solution burned. It felt like a chemical burn as it flushed through and was seriously much worse than I anticipated. I wish someone had told me to plan on it being terrible, then if it wasn't so bad I'd have been pleasantly surprised. I drove myself home afterward, but I was in so much pain they made me wait an hour first, and I think the cramping was pretty bad for 36 hours. And I remember thinking at the time that if DH's office had been closer I definitely would have called him to come get me. Vicodin in the car on the way there and Uber sounds like a great idea to me. ktgrok
So, I'm thinking what I'll do is see if DH can pick me up. The appt is at 3:30, I'm sure I won't be done until 4:30 by the time I wait, get undressed, etc etc. So he could leave work just a bit early that day. I'd Uber over, and have him pick me up.
Wabi Sabi
I would be comfortable using Uber in this situation. FWIW, even though there supposedly aren't many female Uber drivers, I know four people who are Uber drivers and they're all women! My family took a trip to Chicago last week and used Uber three times while we were there, and 2 of the 3 drivers we got even in the city were women. Alicia64
I used Uber for the first time about a week or so after a surgery. The ride to the drs. office was absolutely excellent. The ride back was ridiculous. The guy could barely find me -- I was at a doctors park w/ good signage -- and drove like a maniac getting me home. I swear, if the kids had been in the car I would have said, "Stop. We're getting out." He went fast on streets and super slow on the freeway. Scary. But we live in suburbia. I think that Uber in big cities is way more reliable. I've heard. Given your weight loss surgery etc., I'd get dh to take you. Alley

It may be that DH insists on taking me. I may call tomorrow and see if they have a later in the day appt. When I initially called they had something around 4:30 I think. But then you deal with rush hour. He'd probably have to leave the same time either way.
Starr
I've never had any problems with uber but you will have to be with it enough to use the app. :D
ktgrok
I've never had any problems with uber but you will have to be with it enough to use the app. :D I think I can manage that :) I've used vicodin many times for dental work and such and it makes me happy, but not loopy or unable to function. Just happy. I told someone that I was pretty sure it was impossible to make me angry while taking it.
kewb
I drove myself when I had an exploratory one done. As for Uber, the ceo is a low life and I refuse to use them. I use lyft.
J-rap
I would use Uber or Lyft. I've used both of them frequently and have only had great experiences with them.

Good to know! I hadn't realized there was another option and I have heard bad things about how Uber drivers are treated. Lyft does have service near me and actually looks to be cheaper. ktgrok
So, talked to a few people and definitely going to take Uber. DH is going to work a half day from home that afternoon, so I don't have to worry about being home in time to get the 6 yr old to her dance class. He'll take her and I can stay home and rest. And if I'm not back in time, no worries. (although it is picture day, so he'll have to get her into tights/costume and put on some blush and lip gloss....that may be interesting.....but he was a drama geek so he should be fine.)
