Tanaqui Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I was actually well on my way to finishing them with TurboTax, but they glitched or something and calculated using a much higher tax burden than we actually owed. So I ended up doing them by hand, but it took me a while - I was scared to do them, out of fear that we actually did owe money and weren't getting a refund! But that's all resolved, and our refund will be coming towards us soon. Please, somebody tell me you put it off longer than I did! 3 Quote
El... Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 :cheers2: Here's to done! I finished a few weeks ago, and I'd be losing hair by the handful if I had to finish that today. You walk on the wild side! Quote

You walk on the wild side! It's not difficult, really, it's just tedious. SOOOOOOO BORING. But yeah, I hadn't meant to put it off this long, I just didn't want it to be official that we owed big bucks. And it turned out we don't! 1 Quote
Lanny Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Tanaqui I put it off longer than you did, but we live overseas, so we get an Automatic Extension from the I.R.S. without asking. I will probably file before June 15th. However, I believe people who file close to the filing deadline are smart, assuming they have been thinking about their tax return. If one files in January, there isn't much time to gather information and think about any options that might exist. Delaying is good in this case, as long as one files on time. Now, you can relax and eat Chocolates to celebrate! My U.S. return is fairly simple (Schedule C, etc.) and I do that with TaxACT, but my Colombian return is a nightmare and I pay people who are truly "EXPERTS" (not a word I apply to professionals very often) to do that for me. That comes after my U.S. Return and they get a copy of my U.S. Return plus a huge amount of documentation from me. All bank statements, receipts for Medical Insurance, Property Taxes, etc. Quote
alisoncooks Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I dropped ours off at the USPS this morning... Quote
learning456 Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 :hurray: Two days ago. That was the latest we have ever finished them. We'll try harder next year! Quote
happi duck Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Just finished a couple hours ago...whew! Quote
mamiof5 Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I thought the deadline was always the 15th? I know nothing about taxes :P Glad you are done! Quote
vonfirmath Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I thought the deadline was always the 15th? I know nothing about taxes :p Glad you are done! In 2005, Washington D.C. enacted Emancipation day on April 16, closing down all the government buildings (and that is where IRS is). When April 16 is on the weekend, the holiday is moved to the nearest week-day (So Friday April 15 this year). That forced tax day to be the next day the IRS was open -- Monday, April 18. Meanwhile, Massachusetts ALSO had a state holiday today (that closes the post offices?) so their deadline is Tuesday, April 19. 1 Quote

We do them before...cutting it this close would put us over the edge. Thanks for explaining that to me :) 1 Quote

Actually I believe most of New England had a deadline of Tuesday since we mail our returns to a Mass. address. Quote
