mom31257 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I'm looking at buying an iPad so that we can use the Breaking the Barrier itextbooks. Those say the iPad must have iBooks 2 or later and iOS 5 or later. I've seen the iOS on models I'm looking at, but I can't figure out how to tell which version of iBooks one has. How do I determine the version of iBooks an iPad has? 1 Quote
Arcadia Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) Would this info help? My ibooks has always been updated automatically and I am using iOS 9 now. "To use iBooks 4.0 or later, you need iOS 8 or later. To use iBooks 3.2, you need iOS 7. To use iBooks with iCloud, you need iOS 6 or later. To download from the iBooks Store or use iCloud features, you need an Apple ID and Internet access. To listen to audiobooks in iBooks, you need iOS 8.4 or later." https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204619 ETA: If not apple store online has an online help chat function Edited April 14, 2016 by Arcadia 1 Quote
PeterPan Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 The real issue is not to buy a really old ipad. Check, but some things like older iphones aren't getting updated iOS anymore. I think they're saying the ipad2 is at that point. I have an ipad3, and I can tell you that when I run the Ronit Bird ebooks, which are graphic and video heavy, it's a little laggy. I would think the BB ebooks would have significant stuff integrated. So me personally, I'd look for a deal on a newer ipad, some kind of air. In fact, I would say go with a newer mini ipad rather than an older regular ipad, if there's a difference in price. They've increased processors dramatically, so a newer ipad is just going to be much faster and bouncier at opening those large, intensive files. 2 Quote
happypamama Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 My iPad 2 does have the latest OS (9.something), and it seems to run all programs just fine, but it has been having some issues with things shutting down unexpectedly lately. It could just be that it's old, and it could just be that it doesn't like certain programs (it seems to happen more on some things than others). I probably wouldn't buy an iPad 2 at this point, but since I have it, I'm not upgrading any time soon. I have it sitting next to me, but I never use iBooks (I use the Kindle app or Notability for PDFs), so I didn't know what version it was. I did go to Settings, and it says that my version of iBooks is 4.7, and it loads fine, although I don't have any books on it to try. It doesn't appear to have an update available for it, so 4.7 must be the latest version. So it sounds like if you got a really good deal, you could go for an iPad 2, but I don't know BB at all, so I don't know if it would work in actuality, even if it would work in theory. Quote
