I bought an ACT prep book.  Choosing one over the other was rather random.  I grew up never having heard of the ACT.  Maybe that is a reflection of what was more common in the area I lived.

Anyhow, I wonder is there any reason to take one or the other.  I know most colleges don't have a preference (at least I have yet to come across one that does which might not even be true).

Is there any instance where a kid does great on one and terrible on the other?

Two of mine did better on the ACT and the third got equivalent scores on both.

Many kids seem to have a preference for one or the other.  I had my kids check out both and take whichever appealed to them (which matched where they scored better for those two).

The old SAT was trickier and favor kids with stronger vocabulary compare to the ACT which was more straight forward with no obscure words.

The new SAT just started last month so its hard to compare since scores are not going to be out until next month.

Get your kids to take both and just submit the better score.

I think the ACT has become more popular than the SAT in the last decade.

The ACT is the norm in our state, but depending on subject areas and strengths in certain test-taking areas, the SAT might get a student a more favorable score.

I have heard that all universities accept either test, so it would really depend on which test will give you a better outcome.   Most university websites list the ACT score needed for merit scholarships...I'm not sure if I've seen SAT cut-offs.  But, maybe I'm not paying attention since our dd's didn't take that test.
