dori123 Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Having a hard time finding info on this. Have any of you tried the Brainology Brain Science Program; it's a Carol Dweck workshop for grades 5-9. I have a "fixed" mindset child, and I thought this might be helpful but there aren't a lot of people reporting on it after having used it. Thought I would put it out there -- it's been out for a few years now and surely someone gave it a try?? TIA! Quote
CinV Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 Do you have a link? https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/brainology/?c=1 Quote
Taz007 Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 (edited) I bought it, 1-2 years ago, and it was my worst purchase EVER. Just terrible. I bought two seats, one for each child. My first child finished the program within a few days and I asked for a refund for the second child. Awful. Edited April 17, 2016 by Taz007 Quote
maize Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Don't do it! I bought it, 1-2 years ago, and it was my worst purchase EVER. Just terrible. I bought two seats, one for each child. My first child finished the program within a few days and I asked for a refund for the second child. Awful. Can you elaborate on what you didn't like about it? Quote
Taz007 Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 (edited) Take a look: And, no, the sound clarity is not caused by the person who uploaded the video to YouTube, this is exactly how it sounded. The cartoonish interface is another NO! The entire program IS that cartoon. The weird noises, that they probably think are cute, in the background were so distracting! The feedback required after every module was just awful. The kids just type in their thoughts on the module that they just listened to. They had the ability to put a period into each field, if they wanted to, and move on. My first child finished the whole program in just a few days and did not learn a thing (this child LOVES to learn), I knew I couldn't put my second child through it as there would be tears through out the entire learning process. Heck, I was nearly in tears. Yes, this was THE worst homeschooling purchase ever and I have purchased some doozies! Edited April 17, 2016 by Taz007 2 Quote
dauphin Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I think the content is something every learner should be exposed to, but we mostly used the printed materials (and at the time we bought, it was written primarily for school/group use so some adaptation needed with my solo homeschooler). Yeah I think we had access to the same video materials as linked and I didn't think they added much, but then again I have a related professional background so pretty comfortable with the ideas in the content). You could just buy one of Dr Dweck's books and work from that. We could have covered the key points in a fraction of the time. But if I had to work from a regular book instead of from a structured program, it wouldn't have gotten done at all, kwim? 1 Quote
domestic_engineer Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 So is there another program that covers the same material but in a better way? I tried Brainology a while back, but my child got stuck on the parts of the brain & their functions. I never got around to figuring out if I was supposed to teach it or where that info was. And like PP, if *I* have to do something (for this topic), it isn't going to get done. Quote
dori123 Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 Awesome feedback, thank you. I will not be buying this -- you all have saved us a lot of frustration, sounds like! Quote
maize Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 So is there another program that covers the same material but in a better way? I'm reviving this topic because I'm hoping someone has an answer to this question :) Quote
lisabees Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) I know dd watched some "fixed mindset" videos last year. I can't recall which ones. I know a couple of them were TED Talks. She did watch these Stanford Math videos, which discussed mindset. Rose has posted a list of resources she has used in her metacognition studies. Maybe some included mindset?
