UCF612 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I have a friend who just pulled her 3rd grade daughter from public school. She's now asking for advice from homeschool moms about curriculum. She said she knows she wants something that "is not common core math." She wants secular as well. We use Right Start and Beast Academy, I don't see her liking those at all since they teach in a less "traditional" way. What would you recommend to her? Thanks! Quote
Beaniemom Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 If she is like me it is the technique taught that is annoying. Even though Math Mammoth is CC aligned it does not teach the material the way my dd's ps math did. 1 Quote
Kiara.I Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Well, a lot of programs "align with common core" so it's a bit tough to weed through what she wants. Is it that she wants "traditional math" and not the conceptual focus that CC is doing? Or does she want it to just not be confusing like I hear CC is? LOL 1 Quote
sweetpea3829 Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 You might want to start by explaining that "Common Core Math" is a misnomer. The common core label was the worst thing to happen to what is, actually, a solid conceptual approach to math. Unfortunately, the new math was poorly implemented by poorly trained teachers. It was then viewed through negative eyes by parents that a) didn't understand it because it was different from how they are taught. And b) had a preconceived negative opinion of anything "common core". I'd probably start there and then move into talking about what her student actually needs and which math programs fit the bill for those needs. As already pointed out, most programs are CC-aligned. 7 Quote
FawnsFunnyFarm Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I would tell her to look at McRuffy or Teaching Textbooks. I agree that what she most likely wants isn't to get away from CC aligned, but to get away from "new math". 1 Quote
UCF612 Posted April 5, 2016 Author Posted April 5, 2016 We aren't close enough friends for me to really explain/debate Common Core math, though I've been dying to since she asked for math advice. I think she hates the confusing implementation she's seen over the course of her daughter's public school days. I'll give her a list of these math programs and let her sort out what she does or doesn't want. I hadn't considered suggesting MM and forgot all about Saxon. Thanks! Quote
SparklyUnicorn Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I agree with sweetpea, but if your friend won't listen then Saxon should work well for her. 1 Quote
