earthyfamily Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I have to finish writing my book. I'm just having trouble actually carving out time when I'm not actually going to be interrupted. DH says I should go to Panera a few times and just finish it off. Is that weird? Do people actually go and sit for hours at a time there? Other writers...how on earth do you find uninterrupted time with the kids at home and homeschooling? *Signed: Frazzled and Frustrated Quote
Halftime Hope Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I don't have any suggestions, but I wanted to congratulate you on your book project. Good luck! Quote
Anne Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Panera - or a coffee shop - or whatever - I see people do it all the time! Definitely not weird! Anne 1 Quote
mamiof5 Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 There was a thread here recently, someone was thinking about taking the weekend to write. Getting a hotel room and getting it done. I think it's brilliant! I'm not a writer, but I know I wouldn't be able to concentrate in a public place Quote

bettyandbob Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Neighbor writes at Starbucks. The one she goes to has a group of regulars who do this(they don't talk to each other though). Quote
ErinE Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Our library has quiet rooms. They're wonderful and free. Quote
Rosie_0801 Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Nobody thinks we're weird when we sit in cafes with our school books, so I don't think there is anything weird about sitting in one writing a book. Anyway, people think other people who write books are cool. Quote

And Starbucks too. I go and order food when I get there. Nibble as I write. Then, if it has been several hours I go up and order a coffee and maybe even a pastry. Nibble/drink and write. Once, I even stayed long enough to order dinner. At that point I was embarrassed so I ordered online, from one of their tables, on my lap top then walked by and picked up the to go bag that was on the shelf for quick pick up. Quote
bolt. Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I've done a lot of writing in my mini van, parked in scenic places with no internet. One spot I actually called "productivity park." Quote
Kalmia Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 (edited) Number one most productive place so far: in my car usually when waiting to pick up a kid from activities. The second best was a very long auto repair wait, the dealership had placed desks against windows overlooking their back lot, which had cars and trees, the sun was streaming in and I forgot the outside world and wrote well! I told them I was coming back to work there every day. They told me everyone said that. That being said, it IS the constant small interruptions to one's train of though that seem to derail the process. And there are so many hundreds of tiny things that do it when you try and work from home, phone calls, switching over the washer/dishwasher, dogs needing walks, children needing snacks, schoolwork questions, overflowing toilets, the neighbor's dog trying to get my chickens (though I am glad I was there for that one), cats barfing, checking on slow cooking meals (gotta go knead that dough!), package deliveries... it is endless. Being able to have the uninterrupted mental space to compose your words is vital (so says the one who is four years late <_< on her second book... and has to go clean up cat barf). It's as though you have a hidden camera somewhere in my house...exactly how my days go (minus the chickens hehe). I love, love the hotel room idea, but we are strapped for cash, so that will have to wait until I'm a bestselling author and rolling in some jk rowling style dough. ;P Seriously though, I am definitely going to try the Panera thing. I don't think our library would work, there's only one small corner with one or two tables that would work...maybe. And I kinda sorta hate my local starbucks, it's super tiny and noisy. Thanks guys! I won't feel so weird now doing this. Now to just keep from gaining 20 lbs while finishing...that is the trick. Quote
