Because the topic of transferring credit and credit for AP or CLEP comes up frequently, I thought I'd share a couple explanations I found at one college.  Not because this is a gold standard for all colleges, but because it might help people think through options and questions they need to ask.

This is for Purdue.  In my mind, they seem pretty generous in allowing transfer credit.  There isn't a cap on transfer, but there is a minimum number of credits that must be done at Purdue.

Transferring Credit at Purdue  This page includes their AP and CLEP policies, Dual Enrollment, testing out, and more.

Transfer Credit Guidelines  This page has great details, such as the fact that credit transfers, but grades do not (so the transfer credit doesn't help or hurt the gpa).

If other people have links to the policies at other schools, it might help to flesh out the "it depends" quality of what will and won't transfer.

FWIW, our approach has been that AP and DE credit that is acceptable to the college and degree program is great, but that the main benefits of the AP and DE experiences has been to gain the knowledge and to give admissions a basis for evaluating applications.  It will be great if it opens up space in ds's college schedule, but he may be better served by repeating some fundamental courses (like calculus), even though he got a B in what he thinks was a solid course.
