j_thurm Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Hi, I would love to combine my 4th, 6th, and 8th grader together for a study of Physics. I have been reading a lot of reviews on different curriculums. I read that Christian Kids Explore Physics for 4th-8th grade was too light for the 8th grade student. All the other curriculum I looked at were for 7th/8th graders it seemed or 4th-6th grade. Do you think that combining my three kids in Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics and adding in the journals would be enough for my 8th grade child (who is very smart but prefers history over science)? I was thinking of adding in the Knex Physics sets. What are your opinions on combining and if yes to combining what should I add to make it more in-depth for my 8th grade child. Thanks so much!! ................... Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I haven't used it but have used two levels of Jeannie Fulbright books and I have a current 8th grader. I have also seen the book you're asking about in person... I don't think it's a great idea. The book covers a lot of great material but the language, writing style and experiments would be almost insulting for your 8th grader. We used our last Apologia book for my dd this year for 6th grade, and I felt that it was the last year she would really fit with this series - and she is not an academic type who enjoys science. So I really think their age estimate is accurate. The other problem is that IMO in 8th grade your son needs to learn to do textbooks high school style. :) practicing now when there is no GPA on the line is wise. I recommend Apologia Physical Science by Jay Wile for your 8th grader. It's an awesome course and all the experiments are very fun! Then with your younger one you can let him or her choose whatever book he is interested in of the Jeannie Fulbright books. 1 Quote
