This year, we've been using GSWS as a gentle intro to Spanish.

Next year, my 7th grader will be taking a tutorial Spanish class, so I need to find something for my 4th grader.  I looked at Spanish for Children and I think it would work well, but I then I received the Christian Light catalog in the mail.  CLP has SfC listed as a High School Elective.

Is SfC going to be WAY over the 4th grader's head?  Knowing this kiddo, I know it will take me more than a year for each book, but I don't want to give him something that high schoolers do.

Thoughts?

It's not a high school course. I wouldn't use it past 8th grade. I would think it would be fine with your 4th grader, especially if done over a couple of years. Don't forget about Headventureland for vocabulary review.

I used Spanish For Children, Primer A when my oldest was in 4th grade, and was not happy with it. I ended up modifying a high school Spanish text for 5th grade. I just couldn't find anything I liked for the age group.

SfC is for late elementary and even middle school grades. It's definitely not high school level.

I'm planning to use Galore Park for Spanish for my dd who will be in 5th. So we'll see how that goes next year....

I found that Spanish for middle grades is really tough to find. I did not see many options when I was researching.

Nope. It's great for 4th graders and up through middle school. Speed going through it would depend on previous Spanish instruction and maturity. I have 3 kids in SFC A this year, and will use it with my rising 3rd grader this fall. She wasn't ready for it this year, and used The Fun Spanish (Brookdale House) to bridge the gap between Song School Spanish and SFC. Based on my experience with my other kids I expect she'll do chants and roughly one workbook page daily, along with roughly 20 minutes spent on Duolingo.

Disclaimer: All my SFC kids also use Duolingo daily for review, and the TFS kid started Duolingo mid-year. Duolingo doesn't teach any grammar at all, and SFC needs more review. The two compliment each other quite well.

On the flip side, my high schooler has been going through SFC, but it's definitely not all she uses. SFC easily exceeds the amount of explicit grammar instruction in standard high school Spanish 1 books. DD/10th runs through SFC for the grammar, uses Duolingo for daily usage review, works through Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish, and we use a Holt high school book for exams and such to make sure she's on course. When we recently discussed plans for next year she specifically requested SFC B to be on the list of resources.

Thank you! Very helpful!
