AngieW in Texas Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 My 20yo applied to three grad schools for fall and hasn't heard back from any of them. She will be graduating in May, but actually didn't know that she'd be able to graduate then until she met with her adviser the week before Thanksgiving. One of the courses that she needed to graduate is only offered in the fall semester but she couldn't take it this fall because she hadn't taken the prerequisite yet. It turns out that the class that she was missing will no longer be offered and she has already taken the course that will be substituted for it. So she got her applications in just before the deadlines (because she had to ask for recommendation letters and those have a lead time). UNT and TWU had deadlines of Feb 1st for speech pathology. UTD had a deadline of Feb 15th for speech pathology. She hasn't heard anything from any of the schools and we can't find any kind of timeline on the websites for their decisions. We know that graduate admissions for speech pathology is very competitive. Most schools only take around 30 students and accept less than 20% of applicants. Quote
Penguin Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 I hope she gets some good news soon :) My son is a junior and will be applying to grad school next year. As a family, we are total newbies to the grad school app process and I find it bewildering. Quote
Crimson Wife Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 I'm pretty sure most of the SLP programs have already sent their fall 2016 decisions. I was not able to get my act together to apply as an out-of-field applicant by this year's deadlines but I've been hanging out on Grad Cafe. Has she checked there? http://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/95-speech-language-pathology/ UT Dallas has a spring 2017 co-hort. Cal State Northridge online also has spring 2017 co-hort. Getting a SLP Assistant license in TX I've heard is much easier than it is in CA. Out here I need to complete a formal SLPA training program but I've heard all TX requires is the bachelor's in CSD plus a SLP to sign off on the supervised hours. Quote
AngieW in Texas Posted March 26, 2016 Author Posted March 26, 2016 Thanks. My dd has a very strong GPA, 3.9-something. The lowest grade she has ever received is an A-. and I don't think she has received anything lower than an A in her major. I have sent her the link to Grad Cafe. It looks like UTD and TWU both did a new round of notices in the past two weeks. Quote
Gwen in VA Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Unfortunately late news is often bad news in the grad school process. Some schools in some majors send out the first round of acceptances, wait to see what happens with that round, and then send out another round...repeat as necessary until mid-April. Which is HORRIBLE for the student because he/she gets to watch on gradstudentcafe as various rounds of acceptances go out and their mailbox remains empty. Quote
