ktgrok Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 So, things are going very well at DH's new job, and in a matter of weeks we expect him to be hired full time. Once that happens, and the insurance kicks in, I'll be getting this IUD out. But I'm nervous and wondering if anyone else has had to have one removed where there where no strings to grasp. I've had an ultrasound to check placement, and it is where it is supposed to be, but no strings. He cut them too short and they went up into the uterus. He said when I come to have it out to "schedule it in a procedure room, in case we need to use a scope" or something like that. I'm assuming he means hysteroscopy. Another OB/Gyn at the same office (who I don't like and always hurts when he does exams) said "oh no, you don't need the scope, or a procedure room. We have...ways...." That sounded ominous and like it would hurt. So I'm sticking with the other guy, who put it in with a lovely cervical block after other people tried and failed to get it in. HE never hurts me during exams, so I trust him. Anyway, anyone have this issue? How did they get it? Was it painful? Quote
Laura Corin Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 It depends. There is an instrument that can grab the strings if they are not too far gone. Once I had to be put under anaesthetic very briefly for them to make the switch. Quote

And honestly, I'm 100 percent fine with some anesthetic or sedation. Just not with pain. And I do get the irony of being okay with hombirthing a 10 lb baby, and wanting to be knocked out to deal with birth control issues. 3 Quote
athomeontheprairie Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Mine had strings attached but it had fused to the wall of the uterus. They yanked and yanked in the doctors office before giving up. Later my doctor said I had a VERY high pain tolerance. It was quick in the hospital. In and out in a morning. Quote

I'm pretty sure this one isn't attached or imbedded, the doctor seemed confident it was where it should be on the ultrasound. Of course, he's the guy I don't like, lol. And I wouldn't be so concerned but after having my midwife try 3 times to get it in, and horrid pain, worse than labor, well, I am nervous. (later found out she wasn't legally allowed to do them! She has since lost her license.) Even the doctor I like, who did a cervical block for me, had difficulty as it seemed to try to shoot back out when he first put it in. This thing has really been such a PIA. Quote

I THINK the reason for booking the "procedure room" is that they can do sedation there, in office. I think. And I'm going to ask him to do a cervical block again, for sure. Quote

ktgrok Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 They put me completely under. Good to know. If they struggle, I'll ask to do it at the hospital. Wish they'd do that for my dental work! (getting all my dental work done so I don't have to worry about it during pregnancy. I hate dental work.) Quote
ktgrok Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 I was given a shot in the cervix. I remember it as being uncomfortable, but not painful. I'd had pelvic exams that hurt worse (I'm little and I'd prefer the doctor use the small speculum on the first try). There were a few days of spotting afterwards. I was pregnant within two months. That sounds like the cervical block I had when he put it in. A bit uncomfortable, but not bad. Were your strings missing? Did they have to go fishing for them? How long did it take to get it out?
