justme824 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 I need to grab a quick book for my twelve year old and I am out of ideas. Literally! He has read just about everything I have come across in threads I have searched for. Since this is a gift I am thinking I'd like to stick to his preferred genre of fantasy, or whatever you'd recommend after The Hunger Games, which was his last read. TIA Quote
mc26 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 We just read Masterminds by Gordon Korman and really liked it. Quote
Chris in VA Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Has he read all the Miss Peregrine stories? Has he read the Ink-- series by Cornelia Funke? Quote
dragonflyer Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Heinlein has a series of young adult science fiction. Red Planet was a favorite. Quote
kchrrs Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Try the Itch series by Simon Mayo. It's not very well known but every 11 and 12 year old boy we've lent it to has loved it. Edited March 25, 2016 by kchrrs Quote
Tanaqui Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 (edited) Gifts, by LeGuin The Savage Fortress (no more violence than Hunger Games, can't get the third book on Kindle in the US) Earthsea (also by LeGuin, very classic fantasy) Stranger by Rachel Manija (does have LGBT viewpoint characters and some romance, no sex) Killer of Enemies (this one's on my to-read list) Gregor the Overlander (same author as Hunger Games) The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm Nine Pound Hammer (quite a different sort of fantasy/near dystopia, well worth reading) Shadow Shaper Chronicles of Prydain (another classic fantasy) Powerless Zahrah, the Windseeker So You Want to Be a Wizard (get the new edition, not the original - she's updated the first few books to tighten the chronology and also remove some really ablist stuff in one of them) V is for Villain (the superhero genre is inherently dystopian, have you noticed?) Darwen Awkwright Zeroboxer Un Lun Dun Ship Breaker (has a fairly prominent romance subplot, no sex) House of the Scorpion (very good move for somebody who enjoys Hunger Games) Salvage (mmm... worth a read, but he may not be interested) A Confusion of Princes (has some "fade to black" mention of sex, no details, I would not hesitate to hand this off to my "ew, dating is gross!" twelve year old) The Thief, by Megan Whalen Turner (the first book is not nearly as well-developed as the later ones) I enjoyed Masterminds, which is listed above, but I found that the newly published second book has some major writing holes in it. I don't know what the problem is, but it was a lot harder to get into. Edited March 26, 2016 by Tanaqui 1 Quote
