Nemom Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I would like to have dd watch a lot of the documentaries that are on Netflix like GMO OMG, Food Inc, etc. Most of the websites have study guides and additional information available. I'd like to pull all of this together and some how come up with a one semester course credit for 9th grade. I've never attempted pulling together a course on my own. Any suggestions on what all I would need for her to have enough to call it a semester course and a possible name? I'm looking for this be more of a fun course without a lot of busy work. TIA Quote
Angie in VA Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) Please include Joel Salatin whether or not you come up w/ enough for a full credit. Great subject matter. Edited March 21, 2016 by Angie in VA 2 Quote
Dmmetler Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Food Science. It's usually considered either as part of health or as part of biology, so could be a 1 semester science or health elective. I'd probably go with health over science for high school because health and PE tend to be box checking subjects vs ones that there is specific, expected content. If you need more resources, there are plenty of syllabi online, mostly from university ag schools for high school teachers and 4-H/FFA leaders to use. This is the FDA/NSTA link for their materials http://www.teachfoodscience.org/curriculum.asp 3 Quote
DebbS Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I would consider turning it into a health class. You could add field trips to the grocery store/farmers market and some meal planning/cooking using healthy ingredients as part of the course. Also, along the same lines, you might want to add some research on the ingredients that are allowed in makeup & other personal care products that are very bad for your health. You could use ewg.org's skin deep database. Ewg.org,btw, would be a good resource for looking into food ingredients also. 1 Quote
G5052 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) I'm doing something like that for DD's 1/2 credit health class this summer. I guarantee that we'll cover MUCH, MUCH more than they do at the public schools. She's my "just let me write" kid, so I'll have her write a review or reflection paper for each book or documentary. This summer during the growing season, I'm going to have her come up with at least one dinner each week using local produce from our garden and/or our CSA share. She's already very competent in the kitchen, and I'm sure will enjoy this. She'll also do First Aid/CPR at the local hospital and go through the gym's "how to lift" series. Penguin Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 We are using / planning to us those types of documentaries in our health class. I love them! Quote
Mom22ns Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I agree, make it part of a health credit (or 1/2 credit). I had both my kids watch Food Inc in health. You could add as much or as little information beyond food that you wanted. It would be easy to do most of a health credit based around documentaries though. 1 Quote
AppleGreen Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) We did something along these lines for health last summer. Lots of documentaries, TEDTalks, and some nonfiction, in addition to the textbook. I required reflection/response papers (some open ended, some with a specific focus) following the documentaries and talks. I think it made for a strong, relevant and thought provoking course.
