lewber Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 DS 13 has rash on chest and back, some on face. It Doesn't itch or hurt. It's Worse when he gets out of shower. Started a few days ago. We Thought it was getting better, but it's worse tonight. Doesn't look like hives, just basically red and splotchy. Any ideas? Quote
DaisyDay Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Yes, it's likely an allergic reaction to something new you or he is using. Probably something like laundry soap, fabric softener or dryer sheets. Also consider the soap or shampoo he's using, or even his deodorant. Try and think of something you've changed recently. Meanwhile, Benadryl topically or by mouth should do the trick. Quote
Tap Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) What does the rash look like? One possibility is Pityriasis Rosea, also called the Christmas tree rash, due to the sweeping shape the rash can make on the back (like boughs of a tree). http://www.dermnetnz.org/viral/pityriasis-rosea.html Edited March 21, 2016 by Tap Quote
sbgrace Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 My guess is viral. The way you describe the location (back/chest, face but not arms or legs) makes allergic reaction, contact or food, seem less likely. I do have an in law who, at times, has had hives from warm water and other things like that. But I don't think other rashes work like that, and I would expect itch at any rate. It sounds too sudden to be something skin related to me. If it's viral, it could take a couple of weeks. My son had viral related hives a long time ago, and we used Zyrtec. It's generally recommended over benadryl for skin based allergic reaction hives too. So Benadryl might be worth a try. If it does help, consider flipping to Zyrtec. You don't have to repeat dose through the day. Quote
lewber Posted March 21, 2016 Author Posted March 21, 2016 Thanks for the ideas. There's been no change in soaps, shampoos, deodorants etc. I'm thinking viral. Thinking about it I think he had something similar in past springs. He's got some allergies and always seems to make it nicely through the winter and then get hit at this time of the year when his system is down a bit fighting the allergies. They aren't itching or bothering him so we'll just keep an eye on them for now. Quote
