gardenmom5
I use a local cabinet company. they're generally cheaper than the national brands, AND, they're made better. eta: if money wasn't an object - I'd use Rutt . . . they're amish made. no wonder I drooled over them the first time I saw them. Upptacka
Do you have an ikea near you? We went with IKEA cabinets and we love them! The price was so much more appealing than anything else we found, too. And honestly, I am much happier with them than I thought I would be.
medawyn
I don't have advice about brands, but really think about your storage needs. We just moved, and our new kitchen only has one shallow (silverware type) drawer, and the rest are big deep drawers. Great for pots and pans, but not so great for storing utensils, etc. It also has no vertical storage for things like sheet pans or cutting boards. Also, I would love to have pull out drawers instead of shelves in most of my lower storage cabinets so things don't get lost way in the back. Just some thoughts from someone who is still sorting out the best kitchen organization 8 weeks after the move!

I have my pots and pans on pull out trays behind doors. very easy access.
mom@shiloh
We have Kraftmaid. They sell different grades. Ours are some of their more expensive ones and we are happy with them.
Harriet Vane
Don't buy anything produced by Bertsch. We had a nightmare experience with this company. Over the course of seven different shipments, we had several problems: --Final finish that was peeling and flaking off. (Looked much like sunburnt skin peeling off.) --Missing internal rubber stabilizers on doors. This meant that the middle panel of the door would slip and also that the frame of the door would not hold rigid as well. --Poorly joined corners. If you see anything wider than a hairline crack, then it is not joined tightly enough. --Dark stain droplet marks and dribbles on more than one door. Trying to work with this company to rectify these errors was horrible. They were belligerent and insulting and absolutely unwilling to take responsibility for the poor quality of their product. We had to involve a lawyer, and it took more than a year to finally have a kitchen that was free of defects. To this day, I cannot look at those cabinets without feeling sick inside about all the grief Bertsch gave us that year.
Laura Corin
We are very happy with our Ikea cabinets. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/522893-kitchen-before-and-after-photos/?p=5815530
LisaKinVA
The Cabinet Authority....These are Conestoga Wood cabinets. You can mix and match custom to standard, real wood and MDF, but were about half the price of going through a dealer. Yes, they are flat pack, ready to assemble, but assembly is not difficult. http://www.cabinetauthority.com/
Guest
We have done upscale remodel/custom cabinets and we have bought a flip house with IKEA cabs. The custom was PERFECT but not at all worth the $$$ difference of the IKEA set up. I might have made a couple of different design decisions than the flippers did but I am not in any way unhappy with the cabinets themselves. Carpe
I don't regret my Ikea cabinets either. We went with the second cheapest doors (GNOSJÖ brown-black) by sheer coincidence. We were looking at nearly identical cabinets elsewhere and were quoted about 5× what the ikea set cost.
LifeLovePassion
We installed Medillion cabinets about 3 years ago and have been very pleased. Medallion is one of the brands we have a quote on I use a local cabinet company. they're generally cheaper than the national brands, AND, they're made better. eta: if money wasn't an object - I'd use Rutt . . . they're amish made. no wonder I drooled over them the first time I saw them. We have a couple of local guy quotes coming in too. Do you have an ikea near you? We went with IKEA cabinets and we love them! The price was so much more appealing than anything else we found, too. And honestly, I am much happier with them than I thought I would be. DH would never go for IKEA. He wants all plywood construction. We built our last set of cabinets and just don't have the time this go round. I don't have advice about brands, but really think about your storage needs. We just moved, and our new kitchen only has one shallow (silverware type) drawer, and the rest are big deep drawers. Just some thoughts from someone who is still sorting out the best kitchen organization 8 weeks after the move! Thank you! I am still tweaking the final design and options. It is a small space we have to work with but I am trying to arrange everything in my head and make the best use of space. We have a lot of wasted space I feel. Drawers in the lower cabinets are something I am considering. Either that or doors with pull out shelves. Not sure which I'd prefer. Don't buy anything produced by Bertsch. The Cabinet Authority....These are Conestoga Wood cabinets. You can mix and match custom to standard, real wood and MDF, but were about half the price of going through a dealer. Yes, they are flat pack, ready to assemble, but assembly is not difficult. http://www.cabinetauthority.com/ Thank you! We are really intrigued by this! It might be the perfect compromise between building everything and just ordering from the big box stores. I have requested a quote from them as well. If anyone has layout tips or other things they like or wish they had, I'd love to hear them. One thing I want is garbage cans in a cabinet. We have a U shape layout with a peninsula separating the kitchen from the dining area. I am debating if I do a counter to soffit cabinet to "end" off the kitchen. Laura Corin
Although we bought from Ikea, we had a local joiner fit and customise the cabinets - this worked really well. Some ideas (whether you go with Ikea or not): We have a pedal bin separately, but we have all our recycling in a big drawer under the sink: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/categories/departments/kitchen/24259/ We have drawers behind doors in some of the low cabinets - it makes it much easier to use the full depth as you can see what is in there. We also have two of these pull-out units - they are really narrow and use space that would otherwise just be boxed in. One holds all my oils, vinegars, etc, the other holds the sauces that Husband uses for cooking Chinese food: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S09133798/#/S09133798 Edited March 21, 2016 by Laura Corin
