MrsWeasley Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 We vaguely follow science as described by the WTM, and I remember first grade science being one of the best years for us for science. Next year I will have a first grader and fourth grader. With my current third grader, we used Ellen McHenry's stuff and she loved it. McHenry has stuff for biology appropriate for her age, but none for physics. Her physics exposure is low: she has had a little. I feel like we *should* do physics, but my heart is in doing biology: it'd be better for my middle child. It'd be easier for me. Any compelling reasons not to biology with my oldest a second time before doing physics for the first time? Quote
MerryAtHope Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 At that age, I don't see any reason to not follow your interests or theirs. Science in elementary school is about exposure and encouraging curiosity about the world and how things work, and doing something you are passionate about will likely do a better job of meeting those goals. Farrar Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) I think you should follow your interests and that anything you do for elementary school is fine. On the other hand, there's nothing more hands on and fun than playing with toys and super basic physics concepts for elementary kids. It has a totally different vibe from doing biology in elementary school. So just something to think about. ETA: Just think about how much fun mirrors, magnets, yo-yos, making things sink and float, rubber bands, etc are. That's what teaching elementary school physics is all focused on. AdventuresinHomeschooling Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 You would be fine waiting until fifth for physics. But if you keep it fun, there is plenty of physics a first grader can understand if you decide to do it. I have a first and fourth grader, and we did physics this year. They loved it. The Magic School Bus kit is a really great kit for these ages. Quote
