I'd like to have something like a powder that would cover discolorations AND for it to be SPF30 so I can brush it over my face in the summer instead of regular sunscreen. I'd like it to be virtually invisible. And easy to remove. I had something like this years ago, I think.

Also, when I try to wear lipstick it wears off very quickly. I have a Clinic lipstick that I bought some time ago. I really like brush on lip gloss in subtle shades, but it wears off as well.

The bottom line is I have almost zero make up experience at 41, and I'd like to start wearing something, really, really subtle. But I don't want to mess with foundation and this and that and layers on my face.

What's out there for me? Thank you!

It's expensive and it's not a powder, but I'm in love with the stuff and it lasts a very long time bc a little goes a long ways.

It CC cream. It brand is sold at Ulta, so I use their coupons. As the advertising says, "Your face, only better." It really is. It covers my dark under eyes and nothing else ever has. Age discoloration and acne and mild wrinkle lines (special place for having all three at the same time) all just about disappear and it has SPF50 and supposedly anti-aging moisturizer that doesn't feel like I put oil on my face to make the acne worse.

Most days It CC is the only thing I wear. Tho the It bye bye under eye cream takes years off my eyes according to dh, so I wear that on the weekends.

For lipstick, I wear lip liner instead. I add gloss when I want to dress it up. It lasts longer.

All of the above comes off easily.

I used to use Bare Minerals and they have excellent powders. But frankly it was just too much time to bother, tho really not much just more than I am inclined, and didn't do as well as It CC for my older facial needs.

Bare Minerals! That's what I had when I had it. Thank you for reminding me lol. I remember liking that it was all mineral. What do you mean by too much time to bother? Was I doing it wrong?

Why do you prefer a lip liner?

I find Bare Minerals too dry for me now that I'm older.  CC creams are a great option.

When it comes to lipstick or gloss, usually it will be either moisturizing/comfortable OR long lasting, but not both.  They seem to be mutually exclusive.  I love Neutrogena's lip glosses.  Feels great and nice subtle color.  I just keep it in my purse to re-apply like I would chapstick.

BB creams such as Iope air cushion which is my favorite or skin79. Korean brands don't offer a range of colors, unfortunately. I find that Korean brands offer coverage without the need for foundation and high SPF.

I'm also a big Bare Minerals fan. I am not familiar with CC cream, although I did try a BB cream and although it felt like I was wearing no makeup, it also looked like I was wearing no makeup. ;)

I love Aveda's moisture plus tint. It has built in sunscreen and it's basically a really nice face cream with a hint of tint. It looks totally natural, smooths out my skin and 1 tube lasts at least 6-8 months. I've been using it for years.

If you can have Ulta ship to Canada, I like their version of Bare Minerals just as well as the real brand and it is much cheaper. I also got a freebie of Ulta lipstick and had been surprised by how well the color stays. You can return anything you buy in the store if you don't like it, but double check before ordering if they have the same policy with online orders.

Bare minerals uses a layering method. So you have several powders. A silicone primer, then a foundational powder. A concealer powder. And finally the mineral veil powder. It's not hard and it doesn't take long. But it does take longer than one It cosmetics CC application.

Also I'm finding as I get older that my skin is more sensitive and tender, so multiple applications are less desired. Also, I think powders tend to show fine lines more even when carefully and artfully applied.

My It CC tube has lasted me well over 6 months of near daily use for iirc $35. (I know it's very close to that.) And even if I fall asleep with it on (gee exhausted moms never do that do they? 😉) it doesn't fry my face and cause excema and acne and dry patches from hell.

I could wear the bare minerals with little negative effect as long as I was quick to clean it off after dinner. And even then, I'd sometimes get scale dry patches bc powders dry the skin.

I prefer lip liner bc it stays on longer and doesn't feel as goopy on the lips. Even when I wear lipstick or gloss, I wear it over lip liner so that when it fades off, I still have some color going. There's some really good lip liners out there that aren't the horrid feels like scraping your lips with chalk like it used to be. A good one is still under $15 tops and that's pretty expensive. And mine usually last about 4 months or so of once a day use.

Really?!? I never knew this! I buy the foundation powder and that's it. I'm happy with the coverage (light) that provides, but that is interesting that that is what is intended! Edited by Guest

I loved using mineral makeup, but my skin has just started forming fine lines, so it's not a good idea anymore. The powder enhances lines that you can't see without it :-/ Now I use BB cream. Same light coverage and non-make-upyeel, but it doesn't cake into fine lines and evens my skin tone just as well. I use it instead of sunscreen and mousturizer, so there's less 'stuff' on my face.

I'm not sure how you could decide the tint.

I use "light" which is the second lightest tint. They also have a "fair" that is one step below that and it is VERY fair. Think red heads fair white white skin.

Light has enough tint that I don't look half dead anymore and yet in the summer when I get significantly darker I can still wear it. (I'm a white gal with a hint of olive undertones with blue eyes and light to dark brown hair that once upon a time used to be very blonde.)

The next shade up would be a bit too dark for me even with the full on middle of July and been swimming every day skin tone.

I have no idea if that helps you decide for your skin tone or not. But maybe?

yes really. That's why when you buy starter packs it comes with all that stuff.

If you don't have fine lines, acne, dry skin and just want to look like you put some effort in - than you are lucky and the foundation is enough.

But for the rest of us poor gals, that's why they have the whole layering system. And it does work when applied as intended. Just this weekend I say my oldest daughter down and showed her how to almost literally make her few pimples go away and the scar above her left eyebrow using bare minerals and some simple application techniques. She is over the moon about it.

But for me, all those powders and steps are just not working for my older face. I know how to make it look like it should with them. But I'm too dang lazy and if I can have one cream that does it all? Yep that's what I'm doing.

I just started using Bare Minerals about a month ago & love it.

I quit wearing makeup for awhile (probably over a year) because anything I was putting on my skin was making it flare up & itch. My sister & I happened to be at the mall & as I passed the Bare Minerals place, I remembered that people here had recommended it. Nobody was in there & the sales gal was fantastic. I asked her to make up my face so it looked natural (not caked on) -- I basically want it to look like I'm wearing no makeup.

I wore it all day, washed it off that night, & my skin felt fine. I went back the next day & got a basic pack with some brushes &:

Prime Time primer

Powder Foundation (which has an spf of 20, I think)

Brightener (to use under eyes, if needed)

Mineral Veil (finishing powder)

I also got a lip liner & lipstick (just because I'm a lipstick junkie).

I love it, it doesn't make my face flare, & gives me a nice even tone w/ out looking makeup-y or overdone. I can fix my face in about 5 minutes.

The sunscreen part must also work because I was out all day Saturday (dd is an Irish dancer, so we were in the sun for hours in a parade & other outside performances around town). Regular sunscreen makes my face break out, so I relied on the Bare Minerals for sunscreen protection for my face & it seems to have done the trick. (I'm fair-skinned & tend to burn fairly easily.)

Thanks for this link. I've been looking for something like this for quite a while! Does the "CC" mean something? This is a new product line to me and any education on it would be helpful.

Thank you, I got confused. I see that she mentioned it.

How would I choose my tone if I were to buy on line? And I see that in Canadian dollars it is $70 + tax. So maybe I need to look at another brand.

Is there a good drug store substitute brand?

If you go to the link Goldberry posted, below the "details" section, there is there is a link to help you choose your shade. I liked that it shows face and shoulders, both. I picked medium instead of light because my skin isn't as bright as the light model. I could tell by looking that the next darker color up from medium isn't right for me.

ULTA has a travel sized tube for $15 USD, I may just start with that one.

I'm a simple girl when it comes to make-up: I use Maybelline Mineral Powder. I think it has an SPF but don't think it's very high. I use Olay moisturiser with SPF 15, and go with the sensitive one as it has the lightest texture.

Thanks to Gold for the link. I'm not feeling my best or I would have searched for one to include. Apologies.

CC stands for color correcting.

I still have my newest tube in the box bc I've not opened it yet.

It Cosmetics

Your skin, but better

CC+

Color correcting

Full coverage cream

+

Anti-aging hydrating serum

+

SPF 50 uva/uvb broad spectrum

Physical sunscreen

Chemical-filter free

Paraben free

The travel size and that's what I started with. Iirc, that itty tube lasted me several months.

Listening with interest I have some Olay bb cream that was working ok but I'm kind of fed up with now and was looking at replacing it. I'm seriously considering the CC cream Martha mentioned, I had been meaning to ask on her for some recommendations. I don't need or want heavy coverage but really want some sunscreen and some evening out of my skin tone.

I actually liked the drugstore version of bare minerals better -physician's formula.  It looks less powdery overall, and I got more compliments when I wore the Physician's formula brand.

What I've found that I like even better than that or a BB or CC cream is super expensive - Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation.  They have a kind without oil and one for dry skin.  I use the dry skin kind. It's $48 at Sephora though.  It tones down redness and discoloration but doesn't look like you're wearing anything at all.  It just looks like moist, flawless skin!  If you have a JCPenney or Sephora store near you, they can match your skin and give you a free sample that will last about two weeks so you can try it out.

The closest drugstore thing I've found is Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme makeup.  It costs under $12 at the drugstore, and it's almost as nice. It's a tiny bit more matte.  I suppose some people might like it better, but I think it looks slightly more like wearing makeup. If the Laura Mercier is 10/10 stars, the Revlon is an 9/10.  Personally I use the Laura Mercier in the winter when my skin is pale, and I use the Revlon in the summer when I bother getting anything at all.  We spend a lot of time outside, my skin gets several shades darker in the summer, and I refuse to buy another $50 bottle just because I spent the weekend at the lake.  I rarely bother with makeup in the summer though.

Another trick is to apply the cream with a dampened makeup sponge.  The favorite of almost everyone is the Beauty Blender.  They're pricey, and Real Techniques Miracle Complexion sponge gets as good or better reviews for about half the price ($10 vs 20ish), both are at Sephora or Amazon.

For the money my favorite long lasting gloss is Revlon Colorstay.  They have one in a two-ended tube.  The first one is almost a laquer that you paint on with the color.  You let it sit for about ten minutes while it dries, then top with a clear gloss.  It's much less drying that the Colorstay lipsticks of 15 years ago. You can put whatever clear gloss you want on top and it will stay all day, even on red gloss.  My favorite shade is Forever Scarlett.

For a clear pink gloss my favorite is Jordana.  They cost about $1.99 at Walgreens, less if you buy more at once.  They have a pale candy pink that is just the right color on my cool skin, but it's always sold out.  When I find them I buy them all.

Do you guys just figure your skin tone, or you need to do it at a cosmetics counter?

I bought mine at Ulta, so I was able to test it on my hand for skin tone.

That's what I like about it. It's not heavy at all, completely evens out my skin tone, from blemishes to under eye darkness, to faint lines and provides spf. I basicly look like me with much better skin and no makeup.

I really like that it's the only thing I put on and I'm done.

When I want to go all out, I just put on the rest of my makeup on top of it like I would over any other foundation.

ETA: oh and another important thing for me with the It CC cream. I have tried some BB creams and bare mineral powders but when I spend a lot of time outside or even in the house, it's not friendly to sweat or water. Which even if I want to go without makeup, I still want the spf. The CC cream comes off easily in the shower with soapy water, but I can spend all day outside and not look weird for it or develop that weird wet greasy cake on the face feeling.

It sounds like something out of a Disney movie!

Nope, just an import from Asia.  They've been popular there for decades, or so said the beauty gurus we watch on YouTube.

I use a mineral foundation from an indie company called Aromaleigh Cosmetics. Their pashmina formula covers very very well. And they have samples you can order to help you choose (so many shades). I personally like it better than the Bare Minerals, which I used for years. I can't remember about spf, though. But I've been very pleased.
