journey00
My kids are 16, 12, and 10 and we already have: Pres. Vs. Aliens, Stack the States, Stack the Countries, Duolingo, xtramath, Brainpop/Jr., PBS Kids, Slice Fractions...what else is there? Tia. :)
sweetpea3829
Hmm...Dragon Box has some great apps. The Algebra ones are good and the Elements one. My kids are obsessed with Prodigy Math right now and have been since last Fall. It's not an "app" although I do think they actually have an iPad app for it. But mine play it through Chrome right on their tablets. It's linked in my signature. It's probably most appropriate for your 10 and 12 yr olds as the content goes up through 8th grade. But, it's pretty much free unless you want the premium version (which gives the player more game options, but doesn't impact the educational content). It's customizable, allows you to set assignments from a huge list of math content, has excellent tracking tools and the kids just eat it up because it's a role-playing game. With math built in!

sweetpea3829
Sounds like my kids would enjoy this! Should I sign up ad a teacher or as a parent? I signed up as a teacher and created a class of just my kids. Then I created profiles for each kid and added them to my class. If your kids like video games, they will love this, lol! It is really well done and engaging. The lure of the game is enough to convince even math-phobic kids that the math is worth it.

Bwahahahaha! *rubbing hands together* It sounds better than xtramath.
nature girl
Sweetpea, would you mind explaining Prodigy a little bit more? I'm trying to decide whether to sign up for the paid version...My DD played the free version a little last month, and from what I could tell, the players just walk around and whenever they come across a new creature they go into "battle" by doing math problems. And when you win (and at least from what I saw you always win?) you get a new item of clothing or an accessory. The problems were very well put together, but it wasn't enough to hold DD's interest. Are there quests, or anything like that, as you progress further? Or are you just walking around continuously doing battle?

Are there quests, or anything like that, as you progress further? Or are you just walking around continuously doing battle? Yes, there are quests and tasks that you can accomplish. They roll out new features pretty often, and most recently, they rolled out "Bounty Hunting" as well as a battle arena where you can face off against other players. They are working out some bugs with that though. I guess some kids were deliberately stalling in order to game the system, forcing their opponent to refresh the page (and thus, lose the battle). My kids haven't played the paid version, but we are getting paid memberships soon. I bought one through a group buy. They are very much looking forward to it! The group buy is here: http://homeschoolgroupbuys.com/index.php/2016/01/05/prodigy-math-game-group-buy/ You can still get in on the group buy! And it's a fantastic deal.
nature girl
Thanks! So the paid version just lets you earn clothes/accessories? Or is there more? (Honestly, I'd probably order the paid version just to get away from the screen that keeps bugging you to buy it! But it would be nice if there were cool extras as well.) sweetpea3829
From what I understand, there's actually quite a bit more GAME options for the paid version. Aside from the cool accessories (which you can earn as a free member, but not use...which is a HUGE bummer for the kids and WILL lead to pleas of, "Oh please, Mom, please please! I can wear XYZ hat if I'm a member!)... Paid members have the option to capture more creatures, which become part of their team. They have access to a special "world" and can complete more quests. I actually have a training webinar with Prodigy on Tuesday and can report back if I learn anything additional about the paid memberships. I wouldn't have bought paid memberships for all four of my kids at the full price (because hello...that's a lot of moolah...lol). I would have paid full price for maybe one or two kids. But the group buy price? Can't beat that...so we are just waiting for the group buy to go through on the 17th and we should be full members a day or so after that.
cherimoya
Sweetpea3829, how did you get Paypal to work with the groupbuy? I can't seem to pay.
sweetpea3829
Sweetpea3829, how did you get Paypal to work with the groupbuy? I can't seem to pay. I emailed her directly and asked for her paypal address. I had the same problem with Paypal linking to her page. Her paypal address is homeschoolgroupbuys@gmail.com. Make sure you email her directly to let her know and also, fill out the form on her website.
cherimoya
I'll do that. Thanks for sharing the groupbuy info on this "app"!
