Zoo Keeper
Maybe A Little History of the World? The Story of Mankind (or the newer updated version)? I really like using Genevieve Foster's books as a narrative world history as well; great for the middle grades. Tiramisu
Builders of the old world (Hartman) is my second favorite after CHOW. I hadn't heard of this before, but after looking at the few reviews that were out there, I decided to buy this. I found a $0.01 copy on Amazon in very good condition. Thank you for this suggestion. :)

It has a few archaic terms which I substitute for modern ones on the fly, but all in all very enjoyable.

alisoncooks
Builders of the old world (Hartman) is my second favorite after CHOW. Thanks for mentioning this. We have been quite pleased with CHOW this year for Ancients. I wasn't sure if I wanted to carry on or not, but I see Hartman also has a "Medieval Days & Ways" which looks promising! Worth looking into. :)

I learned quite a bit reading that one. Edited March 12, 2016 by Mrs Twain
