Wilson Hill Honors Composition

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to put together my son's 9th grade year. He is on the young side as he will not turn 14 until the end of July. I really prefer to outsource writing, and for the last two years he took Expository Writing 1&2 with the WTMA. He does well but the assignments take him a very long time to complete. He does not really care for writing. He wants to go into mechanical engineering.

Rather than go on to Exp Writing 3, I was looking at Wilson Hill. Does anyone have any experience with Honors Composition? What does the work load look like? Does that look like where he would place?

I'll probably post later about what I'm thinking for the rest of his classes. I'm just trying to figure out English / Writing right now. Thanks.

My ds is turning 14 in early fall. He did WWS 1 and 2 as well as IEW Student Writing Intensive Level B. He is signed up for WHA Fundamentals of Expository Writing. I consider it a lit comp class since they use lots of literature. This might be a good class for your son before Honors Comp.

That might be a good idea! Will you count that as 1 English credit (.5 lit & .5 composition)? I didn't realize that class included a literature component. Thanks for your response!

I like the looks of the FOEW class, but I just saw where they use Analytical Grammar. Do you know if that's still the case? My ds13 is finishing up season 3. I appreciate the link. I have more to consider. I may even look at TPS. I really like the idea of combining writing and lit into one credit.

It is my understanding that they are no longer using AG in FOEW, but I would check with the instructor.

My DD is in Expo 1 now and will take Expo 2 next year with WTMA. My long-range plan is to move over to Wilson Hill for FOEW after that (because I really want to streamline writing and lit into one class). I don't think I would place a non-writing loving, young 9th grader in Honors Comp, but that's just me and I have no experience with WHA.

Thanks so much. I appreciate this. He doesn't hate writing, but I think he would like to cut back a bit and concentrate on his other subjects. He wants to do well in his writing class, so it takes a lot of his time. He really wants to focus on his math and science next year.

I also heard that AG is dropped in order to have more time for writing. So you are good to go. I agree with fourisenough that FOEW will be a better fit for your son. He can take Honors Comp next year.
