Do you think switching a child to Right Start math in 3rd grade is too late? Will we have missed the main part? We have done horizons and cle. We may stick with CLE, but a friend of mine has seen great success with right start, and it is something I have never looked into. Her daughter is in my history class at our co-op and I watched her figure out something mathematically today and realized my kids don't think that way at all. That is why I am looking into it. I also have a fifth grader and a kindergartner.

Thanks!

I have no personal experience (we started from K), but there have been several on the RS Facebook and/or yahoo group that switched later. RS puts out a Transitions lesson book to help older kids switching over with the way RS teaches before being placed in higher levels. I love it and the way it helps visualize/manipulate numbers.

You could get it for your Ker to use full time and then use elements for your older kids without totally switching their math.

We use RS for 1st grade. I'm blown away by how well my oldest can do mental math. My youngest is mid way through RS B so he's still learning but I can see he has a bright future in math already.

On the Rightstart Yahoo group there was a lady who (a few years ago) started her oldest in RightStart... at level E. She felt it was worth it. She did say her younger students who started earlier found things a lot easier and do that conceptual/mental math easier.

My son started RightStart in grade 3 but he was struggling with his previous program and placed into level B... so not quite the same situation.

Edition 1 has transition lessons. I think edition 2 has the transition lessons built in to each level during the review at the start.... not sure how that works exactly.

We switched to RightStart from Saxon at the beginning of Third Grade.  Is that what you mean?  I did place my third grader in Level C (2nd edition), which is actually the second grade level -- even though she had completed Saxon's second grade program.  There was enough to challenge her and keep her interested, and I feel she is finally understanding math conceptually.  We also do some multiplication workbooks to keep her on track with third grade skills, and plan to begin Level D this spring.

Definitely start the Kindergartener on RightStart A.  It has been so much fun for my Kindergartener.  She will often continue to "play math" with the manipulatives long after her official lesson is done.

Thanks ladies! This really makes me want to try it out. I'm heading to the convention in Cincinnati soon and I'll talk to Right Start there and see what they suggest.
