I have a referral to have my ds's hearing tested by his ped and a recommendation from an audiologist for particular testing as well. I called the children's hospital. I had to answer questions that the audiologist will review and then decide if he needs an appt. Apparently, a recommendation from another audiologist and a referral from his ped is not enough. Okay fine.

Questions started about health/hearing history and any delays in development. The moved to education.

What grade is child in?

Does child receive accommodations at school? No, he is homeschooled

Does child have an IEP or 504? No, he is homeschooled.

Will child be retained? Um, he is homeschooled so that doesn't apply really.

Have child's teachers recommended testing? I am his teacher so yes.

So no teachers have recommended the testing? Two other *doctors* recommend the testing.

So you don't have a recommendation from a school? No, I have TWO recommendations from DOCTORS.

Then she says, "Okay, I will email you a ten page form to fill out for the audiologist to review. Five pages are for you to fill out and the other five are to be filled out by his teachers."

I just said, "Okay, email me the forms"

I guess what teachers and schools have to say is more important than other doctors.

Isn't it silly when they have to follow protocol even when it makes no sense whatsoever?

Our community has a district audiologist who is required to work with any school-aged child up to 21, at no cost to us.  He has been wonderful with our dd, very experienced and helps us with absolutely everything.  It definitely would have been more difficult to navigate it all without him.

Hopefully the forms will be your last hurdle!  Maybe you can sign each "teacher's" form with a different version of your name?  :)

btdt -

the reason they pay more attention to teachers than dr is, presumably, the teachers have more contact with a child in a learning/performing setting with the child.

it's not that they are ignoring what the parent says - just they consider you 'biased and inexperienced' with what is typical for children of that age.  and they usually want several 'voices' giving input.  the parent is just one.

but for hearing testing - I took dudeling to a very specialized audiology clinic. (we had over an hour testing for each of two days)  I had ASKED the major hospital where his other assessments were being done for an audiology assessment - literally all they did was a basic hearing test in a sound-proof room to make sure he could heart.   . . .when I asked about the auditory discrimination testing "oh, we don't do that.  you have to go to ___ audiology clinic" (I went to another one)  . . . then why did I just pay you $$$ to NOT do the test I asked you to do before you even started?????

Yep, I already experienced that but to a more minor extent.
