Awesome Opossum Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 We started homeschooling in november, the kids were in PS before then {we moved states, from OK to NC}. I have 4 kids, 2nd and 3rd graders and 5th and 6th graders. I started with sunlight B for my little 2 and D+E for my older 2... but it's not really working for us. My older 2 aren't even up to week 10 and I'm skipping from week 10 to week 18 because i'm tired of ancient egypt lol. my little 2 are almost 8 and 9. my older 2 are almost 11 and 13. anyway, story of the world seems more our pace/style. i'm starting with SOTW 1 for my little 2 and was planning on SOTW4 for my older 2. however, my 10yo really fights me on the american history stuff, but will sit and listen when i read the ancient history stuff with my younger 2. is it too crazy to use SOTW1 for my 10yo 5th grader or should i stick with SOTW4? my husband is worried that she'll be behind if i move her back to ancient history. it's not a reading issue, she reads at an upper high school level, she just says she doesn't understand it. in addition, we're only in NC for 3 years, depending on where we are then, the kids might go back to PS, so that's in consideration as well. they'll be in public school for high school anyway, as per my husband's wishes. hopefully this isn't too confusing. OneStepAtATime Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Absolutely I don't see why you can't put them back in Ancients if that is what helps them learn and enjoy history. History is fractal and never ending. There is no way to learn all of history and no one right way to learn history. And you can always compress the material to cover more than just one cycle in a year if that is really a concern. 3 Quote
Awesome Opossum Posted March 6, 2016 Author Posted March 6, 2016 Thanks! I love history, always have, so her reticence seems so crazy to me! Quote
RootAnn Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I don't see any issue with doing SOTW1 with a 5th grader. I'd add to it for that kid, but it makes things a lot easier to keep the family together. There are lots of threads on here about how to beef it up (extras) for older kids. Now, knowing SOTW1, you'll probably get sick of the Egyptians again. Quote
Coco_Clark Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Absolutely keep them all in 1 together!! You can easily assign extra books from the library to "beef it up". I'm not sure it's possible to fall behind in history. Behind who? Most public schools barely teacb it at all before high school, lol. Quote
Peaceful Isle Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I'm doing SOTW 1 with a fourth grader, and he loves it. I wouldn't have a problem doing it with him if he was in fifth grade either. Quote
displace Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I loved SOTW as an adult. We listen in the car. She could probably read it herself if you still want her doing American history. Quote
Mrs. Y Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I was like 42 years old when I read SOTW 1 with my dc for the first time. I learned so much that I didn't remember ever learning before that! I purposefully save reading SOTW books until my dc are older because I feel they get more out of them then. I figure if Sonlight uses them in their 6/7th grade Cores, other people must feel similar. 1 Quote
Holly Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I'm using SOTW 2 with a 5th and 8th grader. They both are really enjoying it! They have their own books to read alongside the family lesson, each at their own level. As far as public schools, I don't remember having much history before high school except for some geography and American history. They should be way ahead in that regard! 1 Quote
Bluegoat Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 If she's enjoying listening to it, why not? For that age though I would add other books as well - I don't think the reading level of SOT1 is high enough for a child that age to use as an only history text. Specifically I'd be looking at some stand-alone books (not text-books) on the topics in SOTW. Quote
