Roadrunner
I have been going around in circles with French. I think I got it, and then I go looking at something else, and then something else again, only to come back to what I was looking originally. I think I might have posted last year about this, so if I have, forgive me. :D Has anybody here either used or looked at thoroughly at Vocabulaire Progressif books? Here is our situation. We are pretty much through Galore books, and I scrapped the plans to do French in Action, because I think, given their level of language at this point, FiA is going to add very little. So we have Dictee, grammar, literature reading, and listening component all lined up. Now I need vocab. I have gone back and forth through French school textbooks and decided it's not going to be efficient to implement this program for us. So back to Vocabulaire Progressif. These books are written for adults and at high level (advanced books), the sample text is impressive. I am thinking to get the intermediate level first to plug all holes and then move to advanced one, which is supposedly proficiency level. I like that it has neat and simple answer books, and that the book itself is small and packs a lot. Thoughts? I guess I am hoping somebody here can give me reviews! yvonne
I love those books! Clear, to the point, concise, no splashy graphics/photos or other noise. We've used the Conjugaison, Grammaire, and Vocabulaire ones at different levels, mostly just for review of specific aspects of grammar & to practice conjugations. My boys are currently using the vocab with their tutor. They're reading some novels as part of their online French course, but I wanted them to also have the more current vocab that they'd use in talking to friends/relatives in France. I usually get them from BookDepository.

My only confusion has to do with different variety of vocabulaire books. I am thinking to start in niveau intermediate level, and it looks like advanced level isn't repetitive, so we could follow up. But, I also see Niveau perfectionnement and Vocabulaire progressif du français des affaires, and I am not sure how those fit in the picture. Do you know where in the progression those fit? Or why one would opt for those instead of the others? Edited March 4, 2016 by Roadrunner
yvonne
Id start with Intermediate, then advanced, then perfectionnement. We haven't used the business vocabulary one at all. If you haven't been able to find sample pages online, I could scan a few of the intermediate book for you. (My boys are at a debate tournament and I don't know where their advanced books are.)

I got the samples! Thank you Yvonne. Last question for you. 😄 I see that there is also an extra workbook (tests?) that one can purchase for each book. Do you use those or are excercises in the text enough?
yvonne
I did purchase a couple of the test booklets, more to use for additional practice, but we never used them.
