AggieMama Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 This is on the behalf of a friend who is moving cross country and will home school her daughter the last two months of school because of testing issues. She wants to do something fun. Math is this child's weaker subject and art is a great talent. Reading is a stronger subject. My friend thinks her daughter has learned very little over the course of this year in public school. Any curriculum suggestions would be great. This child will be going back to PS in the fall. Quote
Aurelia Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 The Virtual Instructor for art Mensa reading list, discuss books together - This is the 4th-6th grade list, this is the 7th-8th do a few lessons from something like Maxwell's School Composition (free online), or The Lively Art of Writing read Quark Chronicles for science (they have 3 books currently, Botany, Zoology and Anatomy - all are good for middle school science without feeling like a textbook) pick an activity pack from Home School In the Woods, something she hasn't learned about and catches her interest Mastering Essential Math Skills for middle school, plus Muggins games Quote
MinivanMom Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 If it's just the last two months of the year, then she has a lot of freedom to do some unit studies on topics her daughter is interested in. She could let her daughter choose a history topic and a science topic that she finds interesting and jump in: drop by the bookstore to find some interesting books, watch some documentaries, visit museums or related sites as they move cross-country. A lot of her reading and writing could be folded into those topics, but they should also take a trip to the bookstore for additional literature, whatever looks interesting to her daughter. Then they could add in whatever art her daughter is feeling passionate about. I would take a trip to a good art supply store and buy whatever art books and supplies catch her daughters eye. If math is a weak subject, then I would focus on trying to inspire some positive feelings toward math versus slogging through traditional math curriculum. One good option would be Danica McKellar's middle school math book Math Doesn't Suck. She also has a Pre-Algebra book called Kiss My Math and an algebra book called Hot X. The books are very sassy and fun, but do a good job of covering middle school math in a very appealing, girl-friendly way. Quote
Classically Minded Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Not sure this would be "fun" but it would help fill in gaps - the "Everything You Need to Know About..." books. I have all 6 of them - English, Math, Science, American History, World History and Geography. They are awesome and full of everything you need to know for grades 4-6! 1 Quote
