Jenny in Florida Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) Update: I was driving him home for the weekend tonight when he casually said, "Oh, by the way, I thought you'd want to know that I got an offer from the no-guarantee wait list, and I took it." It will have him back in the overflow hotel housing, but that's fine. So, you may all now picture me breathing again. ******************************************************************************* I was talking with my son yesterday, and I asked him if he knew when housing renewals for next year would be coming up so that I could make sure to have the deposit money available. He said no, that he hadn't seen any information about it, but he'd check it out and get back to me. While we were on the phone, I went to the college's website and searched . . . and discovered the application was closed a few days ago. He missed the stupid deadline again. I'm not panicking. We'll go ahead and put him on the wait list, but at least this time we have some warning and can investigate other options and figure out the finances with some lead time. Plus, he's turning 18 next week, which should make finding a place and signing a lease easier, if it comes to that. My husband still strongly prefers to have our son on campus, and he is furious that our son dropped the ball here. I tried to reassure him that we'll figure it out, and he basically said, "Great. Let me know when it's done." So, wheeee! Here we go again. Edited March 26, 2016 by Jenny in Florida Quote
Jenny in Florida Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 NOOOOOO! My sentiments exactly. I logged on this morning to see if I could somehow still pay the deposit, but the link it closed with a message saying "You missed it." I've told my son to go to the housing office in person and start begging. At least he will probably be higher up on the list than he was last year. Sigh. 1 Quote
JanetC Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 aaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh! I hope that it all works out again. 1 Quote
Granny_Weatherwax Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Thanks for posting. DS hadn't mentioned housing so I went to the school's website to check. Housing registration opened on March 1st. I texted DS and he had no idea the deposit needed to be made this early. He's been absorbed with his research and preparations for his trip abroad. Thanks again. 1 Quote

Michelle_NC Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Wow!! That is a really early deadline. Ours just opened yesterday (I work at a university). Quote
hopskipjump Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 That is a crazy early deadline! A good thing to know for our family going forward (I wouldn't have thought a deadline would have been early March!) - and hopefully, with your ds being higher on the list this time, it will be relatively (lol!) stress-free this year!!!! bettyandbob Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Hey I'm waiting to hear my ds didn't register for fall when registration opened last week. Next year is supposed to be his last and every single semester he's managed to get closed out of a requirement. Some people take a really long time on mastering executive function skills. Quote
Lori D. Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 NOOOOOO! GAAAHHH! [insert sound of throttling DC] SO sorry you all have to ride this roller coaster… again… Hope it has a happy and safe ending, AGAIN! :) 3 Quote
Wheres Toto Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 My daughter called me earlier crying because she received an email from her school saying she was missing requirements to graduate in May. Turns out some credits were put in the wrong place and had to be adjusted but it's great dealing with this just months before she's graduating when there really is no change to add a class in time. :willy_nilly: Not to mention the call (the one I picked up was one of 12 or so) came while I was at work. I'm down to 4 days left, dh leaves for China Sunday, I have to teach Sunday School on Sunday and I'm feeling overwhelmed myself. Quote

plansrme Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 You know, sometimes violence IS the answer. . .. Housing can be so stressful. 4 Quote
school17777 Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Boys! ; ) Hope he finds something close and in a safe area. My kids' school housing deadline was back in end of Sept/early Oct for next year. (Freshman have to live on campus). I think the spots for soph - seniors went in a few minutes. Quote
Sunshine State Sue Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 (edited) I've told my son to go to the housing office in person and start begging. Sounds like a good idea. At least he will probably be higher up on the list than he was last year. :grouphug: Hijack: I've thought about starting a thread on the topic of how our bright, mature, accomplished college students can still do such stupid things. For my ds, it's brushing his teeth, or not as the case may be. :banghead: I'm glad you posted because now I know that it's not just my kid... Edited March 4, 2016 by Sue in St Pete 4 Quote
Gwen in VA Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Dd2 just paid the down payment for an apartment rental starting in May. The rent seems really low, and the place is eager to rent to my dd and her apartment-mate. Maybe too eager.... But the place has excellent online reviews and certainly looks good. Maybe the area is overbuilt. Maybe the economy is faltering. Maybe.... With parenting, the praying and wondering never stop, do they? 2 Quote
J-rap Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Oh my. That makes me wonder if my daughter was supposed to have paid a deposit for housing next year (I know she signed up, but nothing has been paid). Hmmm... better check on that! Quote
ThisIsTheDay Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 My kid's housing app process closed several weeks ago, and housing selections were completed two weeks ago. This was for current students at a very large state uni. She's home for spring break, and when I mentioned this thread to her, she said that housing information is not easily available to the students, and that she's been terrified that she'll miss the deadline. I'm just relieved that she'll be on campus again for senior year, avoiding the need to find off campus housing in the DC Metro area. :) 1 Quote
hillfarm Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Housing applications and deposits could be done as early as January 8 at dd's school. The earlier you get your deposit in, the better your position in line for actually reserving a specific room in May. She got her deposit in within 30 minutes of the page opening, hopefully that will be enough to secure a spot in the dorm she really wants. OTOH, although her gpa and class rank are very strong, her ACT score is average and she thinks that with the math skills she has polished and is using in a current class, she could better it by a point or two. I have asked her repeatedly whether she wanted to retake it on the April date (deadline to sign up was yesterday). She hemmed and hawed, said she would check her work load to see if she had major tests or papers due at that time... Friday came and went. No decision=no April ACT. I did not intervene. The only reason she would need the higher ACT score would be if she decides to change majors and try to get into one of the more competitive colleges at the university, only an outside chance of this happening. 1 Quote
