nansk Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 If your dc studied it as SWB recommends, how long did it take them? How long did they need to find or write an example for each rule? (In 8th or 9th grade,) read a section of the text, outline its content, and then ... write a paragraph illustrating the technique or find an example. 1 Quote
Chrysalis Academy Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 :lurk5: I'm curious too about how people broke this down, as this is next on our Rhetoric list. 1 Quote
Brad S Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 OK, we didn't use it like SWB recommends, but we did use it. FYI, I did not ask DS to find examples, as I thought it would have taken a lot of time for the benefit. DS had already finished a proofs-based geometry class, so the logical part of it was pretty easy to get by that point, and we discussed examples. (By the way there is a Workbook which goes along with it, which has examples.) It was a very helpful book, it's a nice complement to geometry, and the book is very concise. DS thought it was a good book too. Our issue is still more the presentation and style in writing, however, rather than grasping the ideas, the logic and rules. 2 Quote
Erica in OR Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Not a big help here—we will be doing this next year. However, wanted to mention that I purchased A Workbook for Arguments after reading a thread here. It contains the entire text of A Rulebook for Arguments, along with homework exercises and other activities. I haven't pre-read any of the book yet, though. Erica in OR 4 Quote

We had went through the Rulebook briefly the year or two before. His junior year we opted to go through the workbook linked above. It made a world of difference in understanding. I thought it was well done with relevant real-life examples. 3 Quote

Chrysalis Academy Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Hmm, you guys are making me rethink my plans. I have both the Rulebook and the Workbook. I was going to have dd go through the Rulebook now and save the Workbook for 11th - 12th, it looks like too much at this point. But I wonder if I should just hold off on Rulebook and do Workbook later? Elegantlion, did you think there was a benefit to having done both? Quote
Penguin Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I'll mention this in case someone is interested. I saw that Lone Pine is offering a class next year that combines Jacobs Geometry with the Workbook for Arguments. 3 Quote

I know zip about Lone Pine, has your ds taken classes through them? Is that where he is doing Latin? Can you tell me anything about them? Not a super informative website. Quote

I just happened to see it & I think it sounds like a winning combo of texts. 1 Quote

It does sound cool . . .but it starts at 8 am our time!! That would be a challenge for dd. She's not an early riser, nor does her brain wake up all that quickly. Quote
elegantlion Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Thank you for your replies. How long did it take to complete the workbook? I think we spread it out over a semester and we used it for a lot of conversations beyond just the assignment. 1 Quote

The workbook was new when used it and I wish we'd had it earlier. We both found it way more useful than just the Rulebook. 1 Quote
nansk Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) I think we spread it out over a semester and we used it for a lot of conversations beyond just the assignment. Thank you. This is helpful in planning. ... I was going to have dd go through the Rulebook now and save the Workbook for 11th - 12th, it looks like too much at this point. But I wonder if I should just hold off on Rulebook and do Workbook later? ... Originally SWB recommended students should go through the Rulebook in 8th grade. I'm thinking that dd and I may read through the Rulebook in 8th (as a follow up to informal logic), and go through Workbook in 9th (as prep for rhetoric). Edited March 5, 2016 by nansk 1 Quote
