MrsMommy Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I ran across this article, and it was nice to hear of some news stories that aren't depressing. Sometimes I wonder what it says about our society that we would rather read the bad stuff, but that is what's popular, so clearly people go for it for whatever reason. You really have to work to find anything positive! Any good and happy news stories you've come across recently? 1 Quote
Chris in VA Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Nm I was going to disagree with you, and that's not what you asked for in this thread. Carry on. :001_smile: Quote

Chris in VA Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 LOL--that's so friendly. Well, I get a lot of really nice, positive stories through Upworthy and other things that come across my newsfeed at Facebook. Many of my friends link positive things. It is refreshing. However-- One of my pet peeves is how the network "world" news (ABC, CBS, NBC only here, as we don't have cable) is 10 minutes of world news and 12 minutes of fluffy human-interest stuff (and the rest is true commercials to pay for it, or "pretend commercials" that are really previews of what the network is going to show at a later date). They rarely report truly "world news." If I want "hard news" I turn to the weird (hahah) channels our antenna picks up, the MhZ news channels from other countries. I esp like France 24. So I disagree that people only want doom and gloom, because I'm not seeing much on my regular news. 2 Quote

I will admit that I don't watch the network world news...just our local broadcasts. But they, and our newspapers, are full of doom and gloom, and I know there are positive things happening in our community! I guess I see it as being similar to comment cards at stores...people love to fill them out (or talk to a manager!) to share their negative experiences, but it seems like the really awesome experiences just get overlooked. Then again, maybe I just live in a really negative place! Quote
MrsMommy Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 NASA had good news yesterday...successful return of astronaut after 340 days on board the ISS I did see that...but only because I follow NASA on Twitter. That *is* a great story! Quote

Once I saw a TV news item (local, 6pm news hour) about a woman who had been trimming a tree in her own yard and fell out of the tree!! The lady was fine. All I could think was, imagine, you fall out of a tree and make the evening news! That's a rough day. :smash: Anyway, that was in Oklahoma City. Maybe things were slow. Quote
Barb_ Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 My son just asked me this the other day. The only thing I could think of to tell him is that nice things aren't usually news because they happen so often. Particularly nice weather, babies being born, a narrowly averted accident, kids getting accepted into college, someone putting out a fire before it starts, a cop *not* shooting someone or calmly resolving a domestic violence situation before it escalates...these things happen all the time and we are fortunate to take them for granted. It's when the opposite happens (hurricanes and floods, someone suing because they didn't get into a college, a baby being born in a taxi or a tree, the accident that happened) that it becomes news because truly horrible things are by their nature rare compared to good things. Or that's how I choose to frame it :) 2 Quote
