My son would love to do Landry Academy's Filmmaking I course next year as a freshman. Has anyone done this course? Is it worthwhile? If my DS has never done an online course before, would a course like this that he's excited and passionate about be a good one to start with?

The teacher is Tom Khazoyan, and any feedback on him would be welcome as well.

The only things is - the class is full for 2016. :(

Would it be a total waste of time to ask them if they would admit another student? Or would they possibly put his name on a waiting list for if someone drops and/or for the following year?

Thanks!

My daughter is taking that class, so I have no idea on specifics (other than, like your son, my dd thought it looked interesting). I don't know about wait lists, but I do know LA customer service has been great.

My kids are taking their second semester, and 3 and 4th Landry classes. We had one semi dud (it was an art class, and honestly, this style of art is HARD to do online), and 4 great classes. Both kids are taking two per semester next year.

Hmmmmm ... so maybe calling/emailing and asking would be worth a shot?

I would make sure their software is compatible with your computer. I was going to have mine do Landry as I heard such great reviews. But, I wanted to see how the courses worked and show to my child first. However, upon downloading their software to my one yr old MacBook Pro, it would not work. I went through hoops with LA and they referred me to their software provider. I had hoped they would say it was just an issue with their sample classes and that real classes would work. But nope. It was not. In the end, I realize that Landry won't work for us because of their software. So now, I am worried about doing any sort of online class, but at least I have the heads up to try to run the software before actually paying for the course and relying on it.

I'm sorry you had this experience. Thanks for the heads up.

Was it because you have a Mac and their software was only compatible with Windows users?

Landry software can work with both Mac and Windows...we had issues when we first started as well but their tech people spent about an hour and fixed the issue to get the Blackboard Collaborate working.  In fact, my daughter does hers on Windows and my son does his on the Mac.  Mobile devices do not have complete compatibility but can do several thing (my daughter often takes quizzes on her iPad Mini).  We did have an issue with getting the right headphones to work (the best ones are the ones they recommend that cost less than $30).  Customer support is really helpful so I highly recommend contacting them.  Hope that helps!

We use an iMac, Macbook Pro's, and iPads for the kids Landry classes.  Earlier this school year I posted because there was a problem with the last security update on Maverick, and the newly released El Capitan.  It was a permissions problem that blocked the Blackboard Collaborate from launching on anything but the administrator account. Safari doesn't play nice with Java. We worked closely with the techs at Apple, and it was resolved.  We now run Maverick on my iMac, and El Capitan on all the MacBooks.  As posted above, there are some limitations to certain functions with an iPad.

OP, it wouldn't hurt to email and ask about a wait list, we already switched on class around, opening a spot in a closed class.

Thanks for the reply ... I did email and tell them we were interested in that class and they said they would notify me if another section was opened. But for 1 or 2 openings due to people switching around, dropping, etc., they said they don't do wait lists and I was on my own to keep checking back for openings.
