Hi ladies

I will be using Resurrection to Reformation next year with my 6th grader. For writing, they use IEW's Medieval based writing, the lessons that come up in Rod and Staff English, and written narrations. I'm wondering if those that have used this think this is a good line up for a 6th grader. She's a fairly good writer, but definitely needs work. We are skipping HOD writing this year and are using W&R Narrative 1&2. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!!

I think it's a good line up.  I do think sometimes that HOD writing lacks some continuity. I feel it jumps around, using different resources through the years, more than I would like.  Although, it is what many of tend to do anyway. :) (I myself have jumped around with different writing programs)  But, yes, I think it is plenty of writing for that age.

We will also be using HOD Res to Ref for 6th grade next year. I purchased the Medieval based writing while it was on clearance from IEW. I love CAP W&R so I purchased Chreia for next year as well. I have a child who likes to write and don't want to drop something that is working well. I haven't used IEW before so I'm curious to see if it will be a good fit.

It's the only year of HOD that we used the writing as scheduled all the way through.

Do you mind telling me what you used in place of the HOD recommendations and why?

Thank you!!!

We've been shifting between CAP Writing & Rhetoric and IEW for about three years now and in my mix of middle boys I currently have two using IEW and one using CAP.

Two of the HOD recommendations that we haven't appreciated were Write with the Best (I haven't tried the second book, just the first book) and The Exciting World of Creative Writing.  I can't really put my finger on why we didn't like them.  I will say, that I should probably have reconsidered them for my 12 year old as he moved through the cores.  I think my 14 yods didn't like them because they weren't concrete enough for him.  That's why IEW works so well for him . . .he needs really specific directions.   My 12 year old is more of a creative writer and probably would have done fine with them but he enjoys CAP W&R so I'm going to leave him in it.

As I'm thinking of it, I really do think that if you have a child for whom writing is more natural the HOD recs will probably work out fine.  The only problem I've had was that two of my three boys that are in those middle guides are more concrete in the way they think and seem to need IEW to get them moving in the right direction for good writing.

Just as an aside, we also like to work on writing a bit everyday so I generally schedule writing four days a week (one of those days being Friday when we have no other HOD assignments).  One of my issues with the HOD resources was how they were scheduled in some of the guides which made it very easy for me to leave their recommendations behind.
