Critterfixer Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Good morning. Welcome to March (in two days). We've gone all winter without more than a dusting of snow, it's warm today and the bees are thick in the maple tree. But March is always very unpredictable. I'm toying with the idea of tilling the garden, while knowing that at any point in March we could get an ice storm. Schedule for the day: French-Review several units Latin-Continue lesson 16 on Adverbs Math-Lesson 4, CLE, 1 page of Key to Fractions Writing-Finish the last part of last week's WP, get the spelling from the upcoming week's model. I have some housekeeping and a little cooking today, mostly laundry and some sweeping. Should be a fairly restful day. 8 Quote
Aurelia Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Got some yard work done this morning, and vacuumed one room. Still have the rest of the house to go, but it's more than has gotten done the last few weeks. School so far: 2 lessons in math (and in less than 45 minutes!), spelling (up to step 18 in level 1 of AAS, since it's all review), handwriting and English. She just has to finish her reading: 2 chapters in history, 15 more pages in A Kid's Herb Book, and a chapter in Black Beauty to be done for the day. She's trying to decide if she wants to do art or call it a day. Last week, I started having DD watch the AOPS videos for pre-algebra to go along with her math book, and she seems to like them. It's too soon to tell if they are helping, but I'm hopeful. I'm pretty sure AAS is not going to be the spelling solution, particularly considering our track record with it - bought twice and abandoned twice - but maybe it will help. Fingers crossed! 7 Quote
Raifta Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Well today's the last day before I start work full time. Kids and I have done Math and are about to do some Bravewriter and MCT. They did piano and guitar practice. I've been cooking and cleaning. I cleaned the cat boxes for the last time, did DH's laundry for the last time and vacuumed the main floor for the last time. I've informed the family that in addition to working full time I will keep them fed (ie. meal plan, grocery shop, cook) and plan school for the kids and do it with them evenings/weekends but I've resigned from cleaning. I went on a reconnaissance mission to figure out where my parking lot is located. Went grocery shopping. Now I need to make my salad for lunch tomorrow and figure out what I'm wearing. 7 Quote

mama25angels Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Eye exam for youngest today and hoping to make it to his music lesson. Want to finish our taxes and get them filed, a little housekeeping and as much schoolwork as reasonably possible with plenty of breaks in the mix. Rafita-enjoy your first day back at work! 6 Quote
Critterfixer Posted February 29, 2016 Author Posted February 29, 2016 Happy Leap Day! It's a pretty day with lots of sun and no clouds, for now. By nightfall we are expecting rain and thunder. So it might as well be March. Today's schedule: French-Unit 9 Latin- Lesson 16, cont. WB-finish translation, Vocabulary review Math-1 page of Key to Fractions, CLE 508 Quiz 1 Grammar/Composition-Spelling practice, work on the final act of the story for the WP. Tomorrow I will have them write it all up to final, and we will move on to the next story with discussion on Wed. History-OUP Cp 9, second section with questions. Additional reading in Mills, Cp 16 Literature-Grail Quest continued, pt 7,8,9 Science-PH Cp 5, sec 5 with questions. Additional reading in Volcanoes, Cp 8 (which strangely enough relates with geography today-didn't plan it, it happened!) Geography-Lesson 24-Greater Antilles For me: French, Latin, Algebra, Writing, Housekeeping, get the next questions ready for the next model in writing. 6 Quote
MrsWeasley Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 We've had a rough start today. DC1 lost some of her spelling stuff. I love AAS, but keeping track of everything has been rough for her. And I really want to reuse this for my younger kids! DC2 snuck off with the laptop to watch Clone Wars during chore time. DC3 keeps whining to go outside but is too little to go by himself. The weather is nice for February here, but it's too cold to do school out there. Finished: DC1: Writing, FLL DC2: nothing Still up: DC1: piano, Spanish, history, math, geography DC2: violin, math, reading, writing, grammar, handwriting 6 Quote
Soror Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 How long it takes to do work when your son has been at camp all weekend and didn't sleep very well....FOREVER!!! The girls are thankfully done, ds still has writing to do and a couple of odds and ends that are going to have to be moved. I didn't sleep well last night and need a NAP before tonights activities. Good weekend overall, will be a busy week. 4 Quote
Jean in Newcastle Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Today's school has been unexpectedly preempted by needing to stay all day in the big city for doctor stuff. Dd did get math done and earned a frozen yogurt for another 10% increase in mastery. And she got grammar done. So it wasn't a total wash. Ds is working on his stuff independently at home. Sahamamama Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Sunday 2/28 Stayed home from church today -- Three of us with coughs & sore throats, tired (from coughing all night) & achy (from coughing all day) Hubby out of state all week, left early this morning Readings for Community Bible Experience Laundry Cooking (several things) Rabbit cages Early bed time for all Monday 2/29 Still sick (Squeaky & Mommy; Sugar Lump is better; Squishy hasn't been sick) Hubby safely arrived at destination Regular chores, meals, laundry, pets & hygiene Readings for Community Bible Experience (we listened to a CD because no one could read aloud) School Work: Instrument Practice (all), Vocabulary (all), Spelling (all), Assigned Independent Reading with written work (all), Math (all), Exercise (all), study for Science quiz (all), study for History Test (all), Recitation of Poetry Memory Work (all) Nap -- This is the only thing that will put our health back on track. It's the same way, year after year in February/March. When the girls wake up, I hope to get Grammar and Composition done with either 3rd grade or 5th grade. I would do a snuggly read aloud if I could, but I have almost no voice today. Maybe we'll watch a movie instead. We're supposed to go to Awana tonight. I feel torn between disappointing them (e.g., "We're staying home") versus pushing sick people to go for the sake of the non-sick ones. Well, the only chauffeur is me, so it's my call! I hate going out on a Monday night. :tongue_smilie: 7 Quote
Penguin Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 We are in NC for two more weeks, and we finally have some nice weather. Mmm, I am loving being in the land of Whole Foods and Barnes and Noble  . It is always hard to stay motivated to work on Danish when we are not in Denmark. Fortunately, I prepared for that. We started watching Matador, and it is fantastic. It is a Danish miniseries that originally broadcast in the 1970s, and covers the time frame of 1929 to 1945. It remains the most-watched series in Denmark, and I can see why. The characters and the storytelling are first-rate. And there is also a ton of history to be absorbed. Win!! Trying to cram for the National Latin Exam (NLE). Ugh. I don't think he will take it next year. We just never seem to get organized enough to be on top of it. Books we are currently reading: Odyssey The Year of Living Danishly (funny) The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson (read-aloud) 7 Quote

I can't seem to find the series you're referring to -- every search comes up with a more current TV series. Soror Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 So, short on time, busy week here and I'm feeling grumpy!!! Sahamama- get well soon! Ds eventually finished his stuff yesterday. I left him to work on it while I took a desperately needed nap and checked it when I got up. Today is the first day of the art class for the older 2. It is a rainy day but hopefully we can miss traveling in it. 3 Quote
Critterfixer Posted March 1, 2016 Author Posted March 1, 2016 Grumpy Tuesday. The boys and I went out with DH, and all three of us ended up having nightmares. I guess ice cream after dark just isn't something we should be eating. Anyway, we are up and ready to do school on a cloudy, rainy morning. Schedule: French-Unit 9 Latin-Finish Lesson 16, workbook, grammar recitation Math-Lesson 6 in CLE, 1 page of Key to Fractions Grammar/Comp-Spelling Practice, Lesson on Prepositions in Harvey's and Final the WP History/Science-swap from yesterday Literature/Geography-swap from yesterday My schedule-French, Latin, Algebra, Writing, Housekeeping, get school ready for tomorrow. I have to work, unexpected, but the boys will have to try to keep up since we do want to take a full week off sometime in late March. My job is to make sure all the work is written down for them and all books are packed and ready for tomorrow am. 3 Quote

Have you seen this? http://matadoronline.dk/ Alas, it is not easy to get with English subtitles. I did buy a version with English subtitles, but we (finally!) have progressed enough to watch it with Danish subtitles. I think I bought it through amazon.uk, but I will look at my records. I actually bought it a few years ago. The other issue is that it is only available in the European DVD format, so you would have to have a player that can play that region. It really is fantastic so far. We are only on episode 8...a lot left to watch. That online site actually has the manuscripts (in Danish) for the first 12 episodes. We use those and the episode summaries AFTER we watch to sort out the parts that confused us. 3 Quote
MrsRobinson Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Good morning everyone! Never made it here to post yesterday but we got a big math block done, some reading and lots of outdoor play since the rest of the week is supposed to be rainy. Today: -start pork roast in crock pot (done) -2 loads laundry (in progress) -school lessons focusing on a LA block today plus a regular math lesson -post office -drop off recycling -library trip for desk pick up only -evening activities 4 Quote
Sdel Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Ugh. Last week ended badly ( sick/allergy/low energy) and this week has started the same. I took two unintentional naps yesterday. I haven't done much housekeeping this last week and now I have a mountain of tasks to do before visitation tonight and going out of town tomorrow. Add in the family drama and other mini crisis (2 flat tires in one week) and it's been a mess. At least some school has been done, but it's been a bit hit and miss. We are taking school with us since we are tagging along while DH attends a conference, so we'll have the hotel time. Maybe we can catch up some. Right now I just really want to go to sleep. Tawlas Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Well, I'm back from all my gallivanting (train ride to Prince Rupert and back one (extra long) weekend, then a trip back to my hometown to celebrate my Oma's 90th birthday the last (extra long) weekend). Hoping to make a good dent in our school in the next few weeks before we're hit with the next crazy few weekends - we have a normal weekend coming up, followed by pretty much a month of ridiculous with two (related) three-day seminars for all the adults requiring grandparents to come stay with our kids so we can attend, three birthdays (including dd's 3rd!), one week-long visit for dsd with her dad, Easter long weekend), a trip for me and the boys to Calgary for a five day visit with very good friends and week where dsd is visiting her auntie in the Lower Mainland. Oh, then ds's 9th bday and then a weekend visit from a high-stress friend. I'm seriously contemplating dropping the rest of RSO's chemistry and going about a more relaxed nature study via the Nature Connection (I think that's what it is?). We're 2 lessons away from finishing W&R Fable so I'm hoping to be done that by next week (or maybe the week after). DSD is three lessons away from finishing REWARDS. DS6 is only a few lessons from finishing AAS1 and MM1. So my "imperative" workload is about to drop and I won't pick anything up for a month or so. So that helps. But really. How did I get so busy?! Is it weird that I'm also looking forward to the annual reading test I do for the kids every year? All three of them have progressed quite a bit, I'm pretty sure they've improved by a year from last year, but since dsd is behind by a grade level or so, I always hope we manage to close the gap lol. DS8 seems to be finally snowballing a bit as far as reading goes. It's just not so much of a struggle for him as it has been. And DS6 is just amazing. So nice to finally have a natural reader after the struggles of my first two lol. That's still months away though. One more random thought: I think I've decided I won't be attending the conference in our province this year. Well, since it's held only an hour from my hometown, I may combine an afternoon in the vendor's hall with a visit with the kids to my parents' but I won't do the seminars. They weren't bad last year, but it's just not really right for me. There are no more secular conferences within a few provinces (or even states!) from me. Critter, I love that your kids can work for their Nana! Sigh. Maybe some day my kids will manage that too . . . As my kids get older, I'm more appreciative of their younger years, which also makes me appreciative of their current ages since I feel like I have better perspective of how quickly it changes. At the same time . . . it sounds delightful :) 4 Quote

MrsRobinson Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Yesterday was a blur of phone calls and drama with math and science shoved in between. So glad to put that day to bed. Today, I was in the kitchen all morning making dinner for a friend that just had a baby. Pbs kids baby sat the 4yo, and the 7yo baby sat the infant. Dinner and baby gift were delivered after lunch and we had the rest of the afternoon to ourselves. Read aloud, math, science, for dd, and writing practice for ds since he wanted to label some drawings he did. He's learning letter formation through words like "alien" and "turbo booster." :D 4 Quote
Jean in Newcastle Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Thursday - library school went well. We haven't gotten to project afternoon as much lately because of babysitting commitments and today was no different. Dd is helping out more for a family who is moving and I have to admit that I'm going to be so glad once they are gone. I know dd likes the money but they have turned out to be a bit on the entitled side and navigating that can be a bit infuriating at times. We just had an upset to our usual testing place/provider and I was just thinking today that I needed to sort all that out once and for all. I got home from errands and there was the perfect e-mail in my box giving me the perfect solution. So that is all scheduled. Phew! One more thing I can cross off of my mental list. Ds did history on his own. And we listened to a lit. lecture in the hall. I've been a bit unhappy with the TC lit. class we were doing - it seemed to be sex, sex and more sex. While I don't shy away from it, I don't know that I really want that to be the main focus of my senor's lit. class either. I mentioned to ds that after we finish the lectures on this book he just read that we would branch out to other books and lectures and would be dropping this series. He was so relieved! So now I have to do homework on what we're going to study next for lit. 5 Quote
Sdel Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 School done. No school yesterday - travel day. We are in DC. Hit a rough patch with math today because I didn't pack manipulatives and she was upset about that. Once we got through that she did well for spelling and grammar. Then we went out to sight see and went to the Lincoln Memorial. History - had a mini discussion of Lincoln/Civil War at the memorial. Tomorrow all the Republican candidates are going to be speaking at CPAC and we are hoping they will let DD and the GS in to tag along to hear them. Stefanie 6 Quote
Soror Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Quick check in, our week has been tooooo busy, something every day if not multiple things. I knew it would be busy but things have taken 2x as long as I planned along with me not feeling the best. We got some catching up done yesterday and I'm hoping to finish with anything else that has to be done today, fingers crossed. We have book club this afternoon that I'm leading at my son's request and I'm way nervous, don't know why I agreed to this. Anyway, got to get off I want to finish the book I'm reading, preview book club book again and go over the questions I've wrote down again and try not to have a nervous break-down. After book club I'm taking the kids to my mom's house for the night and I'm going to come home and veg out- I need down time!!!!! 4 Quote
MrsRobinson Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Storytime again at the library, new library books, lunch out (ds earned it with good attitude) and afternoon school work with dd is done. I should be leaving for the grocery store right now but I do NOT feel like it. Baby has managed to shimmy out of his pants and socks, which says to me "not going anywhere." Jean- glad you resolved the testing issue! That has to be a relief. Stephanie- enjoy your trip! We are planning a trip to NY in 2018 and we are thinking of extending it a few days to do DC too. Crazy advance planning... not my idea. There are many reasons for that all to do with extended family traveling with us. We have plenty of travel happening between now and then without PaPa Precision. :D Soror- take care of yourself. You don't want to get yourself too run down. :) Sometimes everything collides in one week on the calendar and it's unavoidable. I have a week like that at the end of the month. Have a great weekend everyone! 4 Quote
Aurelia Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Been busy. Mostly spent this week catching up on subjects missed over the last couple of weeks, and we're mostly on track, with the exception of art. DD got a bunch of school work done today: 2 math lessons, WWS, ELTL (2 lessons), handwriting, science, and history, plus another chapter and a half of The Hobbit (we listen to it on audio, so she did that while eating lunch and prepping for tumbling). All that's left is to read a couple of chapters in her lit book, but that will have to happen tomorrow because today she's at open gym after class, and won't get home until after 9. I managed to injure my neck on Tuesday, and am still recovering. I'll have to go lie down again soon, because apparently supporting my big head right now is too much. Since I can't do much else, I've been reading and virtually shopping for curricula next year. I ordered RLTL last week, and someone finally convinced me to buy Spelling You See yesterday, so I've got both on the way to my house. I guess if we don't use RLTL, I can give it to my brother for my niece when she gets older. I'm still trying to figure out what to do for math and writing, though. I just found out we're going to be spending DD's birthday weekend at an out of state competition, so there won't be a lot of time to celebrate. It's mandatory to attend in order to compete at Junior Olympics, so yeah, no party. Maybe some of her friends will be staying at the same hotel and they can play at the pool. I've tossed out the idea of telling the announcer at the competition and having everyone at the gym sing happy birthday, and she waffles between "OMG, no! That's so embarrassing!" and "That would be awesome!" We'll see how she feels about it when we get there. I didn't want to surprise her, though, because if she was really embarrassed she would do miserably in her events. 4 Quote

You don't want to get yourself too run down. :) Sometimes everything collides in one week on the calendar and it's unavoidable. I have a week like that at the end of the month. Yes, that is what happened this week. I sure didn't plan it this way!!!! We made it through book club and it seemed to go fairly well. I think we'll do it again but not until May, life is just too busy. We had our group nature study this week as well(that was supposed to be last week but the weather didn't cooperate). I really enjoyed that and it seemed our guests did too. I loved seeing the kids playing together in the forests, getting dirty and adventuring. I've scheduled our next one already it will be in 4 wks and I plan to have some age/interest/ability differentiated activities. I kind of wanted to see who I would have and what they would enjoy before going too detailed but now that I have a better idea I'm excited. The kids had check-ups this week. Everybody is doing well but we are going ahead and finally testing the thyroid of my youngest. Her birth was the only time that she was normal size, she is really small. I mentioned it to the dr. last year but he wasn't concerned b/c developmentally she is on target but after not gaining much this past year we are going ahead and testing(that was not a fun blood draw!!). I have Hashimotos as does my mom and husband's sister and my husband's mom has some unspecified thyroid issue, genetically the odds aren't good. I know pretty much nothing about thyroid treatment in kids but we'll cross that road when we get there, I expect the results next week. We got mostly caught up yesterday, ds still has some grammar to do and he will do his mythology test Sunday. I had added some MM work for some review but I added it at the same time that his JA work has gotten harder and has been taking 2x as long so I am working on adjusting that on the schedule. Both kids liked their art class this week- I'm hoping it will draw ds out of his shell more IRT art. There is a sewing class coming up this Friday for dd2, on one hand I'm glad that she scheduled one for her age and on the other hand I WANT a FRI off, I'm supposed to have Friday's off now!!!!!!! Anyway, next week is looking much, much better, although I have eye and teeth cleanings I need to schedule and an ortho consult for dd1. I need to just bite the bullet and do it. 3 Quote
