AB17, do you know about College Confidential? It has lots of opinions by prospective and current students and their parents. Both H-S and Trinity are listed there and have active discussions.

Here's a link to their college discussion list:

It's not that we don't want to help you, but we're a bunch of moms. One of us might have a kid at your choices or have visited during a college search, but we won't be able to give you the nitty gritty student life details you're looking for.

For my part, one of my friends had a son attend Trinity after graduating from Episcopal High in Houston with adequate but not excellent grades. He liked it fine, but at least for him it was a party school. He did get a job and become an upstanding adult after graduating a couple of years ago.

All I know about Hampden-Sydney is that my sister-in-law's friend's son is in his first year there and sent out a lot of applications to try to get accepted somewhere else as a transfer.  Apparently H-S is truly in the middle of nowhere and there is very, very little to do.  I don't know if that's the sole reason he wants to transfer or if there are other reasons.  I do know that they gave him quite a lot of aid.  I'm guessing a lot of it was merit, but I can't say for sure.  He attended a large, well respected high school and was very near the top of his class.
