mom31257
If you were going to sample foods without salt in order to taste the difference salt makes, which foods would be best to use? Thank you!
SparklyUnicorn
An interesting one to do is melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, etc.).

mom31257
An interesting one to do is melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, etc.). Hmmm, I already eat those without salt. I would have to do it the other way around!
mom31257
Are there foods that would bake differently if the salt was left out?
Annie G
When I forget to salt rice, grits, popcorn, or broccoli, I notice.
Lady Marmalade
Are there foods that would bake differently if the salt was left out? Brownies. Find a recipe that uses a full teaspoon of salt. Make one batch with and one batch without. Taste the without batch first. They'll still be okay, but you will notice that they are not near as tasty as they usually are. Like they're missing something. Then taste the salt batch. Ohmigosh, brownie nirvana returns.
Guest
Avocados and beef. Both taste hugely different without salt.
Critterfixer
Popcorn. Foods that require baking power or soda need their salt. There's a chemical reason why, but it escapes me right now.
YaelAldrich
Are there foods that would bake differently if the salt was left out? Bread, cookies, they all need salt or they taste flat and bake oddly.
gardenmom5
I would include oatmeal french fries popcorn (no butter either - butter has salt.) My mother never salted anything. I grew up with no salt in cookies, pancakes, oatmeal, etc. I was also, it turns out, salt deficient.

bolt.
Butter itself: it isn't even recognizably the same flavour to have unsalted butter.
clementine
Popcorn, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, eggs.

Nope, I don't salt my melons thoufh I've had them that way and they're good. Avocado is one of those foods whose flavor profile changes very dramatically when salted. It's interesting to see which flavor notes come out of brighten with salt added. Beef as well :)
Ailaena
Peanut butter! I grew up with a no-salt mom, and then I became a no-salt mom and I don't think I am salt deficient? Is that a thing? The only thing I add salt to is roasted potatoes; I don't even bake bread with salt!

Even if you don't add salt, if you eat any commercially canned or prepared foods (even ones that don't seem salty), you are getting salt in more things than your potatoes. Symptoms include GI issues, muscle spasms and other muscle issues plus cognitive impairments.
gardenmom5
if you want to do popcorn - do one with salt and salted butter, and one with no salt and unsalted butter. that way - they still have the "butter" flavor (but none of the salt that is in the butter.) Embarrassing.... I had just never realized it could happen through diet. Even though I make nearly all the food we eat, I still buy cheese and chocolate. And sometimes eat out ;) (And yes, my major complaints at restaurants is that things are too salty :p )
