We had been treating her stomach aches and occasional diarrhea and vomiting under the assumption of lactose intolerance, but the test came back positive for e. coli

I was so surprised that I didn't ask her dr all the questions I now have....Dr only said to keep her hydrated with water and continue with the probiotics

What is best for her to eat?  Plain foods, I assume - chicken broth, white rice, dry toast, applesauce?  For how long?

Continue to stay away from dairy, fatty foods, nuts/seeds, sugar?

Any been there, done that?  How long did your recovery take?  Dd had a stomach bug before Christmas and has been dealing with this off and on since then.  I assume that the e. coli started then - poor thing.

IIRC, there are different strains of e. coli, but it might be worth trying D-mannose, which binds to at least one type.  It is available both in capsules and as a sweet powder that is tasteless in liquid.

One time I tested positive for e. coli. I think they gave me antibiotics or something? And no instructions on diet at all. Dh and I ordered the same meal at a restaurant and both got sick. It's plausible someone at the restaurant didn't wash their hands and handled our food. Everyone has e. coli present in their body. She's already seen the doctor. Is she feeling better?? If she's feeling better I don't know that diet would need to change.

I did a quick google search and it shows that D-mannose works on e.coli that is responsible for UTIs. I'm not sure it will help dd, but I will continue to research it.

Thank you.

No antibiotics for this e.coli - perhaps this one is different, but antibiotics can actually cause more problems with e.coli.

Dd has been dealing with this since having a stomach bug before Christmas.  She started probiotics (which helped a bit), then I thought is was a lactose intolerance problem (also helped), then we went to the dr when it all came back with a vengeance.  A stool sample confirmed e.coli

She has fluctuated between stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling ok and everything in the middle. I decided it was time for a trip to the doctor.  She will hopefully be seeing a GI specialist in the next couple of weeks.

If her symptoms get worse, particularly if she gets blood in her stool, take her to the doctor right away. There is a rare but serious complication associated with E. coli infections. My nephew spent a summer in the ICU because of it.

I hope your daughter feels better soon!

Activated charcoal capsules will help. You can google to see what the dosage should be. It will help absorb the E. coli. Just don't give the probiotics until after the charcoal has stopped the diarrhea.
