Crate/kennel training puppy Help!

I just got a new puppy and I am planning to crate train him. I've been reading a ton about the subject but I am finding a disconnect. It seems like everything I read says to get him used to being around the crate and give him treats. Then maybe a treat in the crate, treat for staying in for a moment, then a treat for shutting the door. Basically, very slowly work up to a minute in the crate, then two, three. This all makes sense except what am I supposed to do the first night? Obviously, I can't have him through all those steps in one day. I'm confused. Is the nighttime crating independent of the rest of the day crating? Help please!!!

I crate trained my dog as soon as we brought her home at 8 weeks. She never cried. I know that is no help....have you tried crating the dog overnight?

We just got him today! I may be worrying for nothing though. I put him in his crate while I put the kids to bed and he hasn't made a peep! Fingers crossed he is a mellow dude! 😊

I haven't had any issues crate training puppies...they seem to instinctively like their own den.  Older dogs...that can be another story.  I have a foster dog right now who we had to get comfortable with a crate.  It did take a few days, lots of treats -- and she still doesn't like being left alone in the crate, but at least she's not chewing it up!

If you stick with it you will b so happy. My dog is 12 now and she sleeps in hers even though we no longer shut the door. And if I ever need to crate her she gives us no problem.

When she was a young energetic dog she was suppose to be an outside dog, but she MUCH preferred to be inside with her humans. So she would run to her crate and sit inside with the door open.....eventually she would come out of the crate but stay right by it.

I crated mine the first night we had her. She cried a lot and I ended up sleeping on the floor next to the crate for a few nights but that's all it took. Well adjusted dogs that were not taken from their mothers too early will usually have no trouble with it; their crate is their "den" and they like it. It makes them feel safe. My female no longer needs the crate (our bed is now her safe place) but our other dog will go into his to sleep even though we don't make him.

We are 9 days into having a puppy. Here is what I've learned:

(Keep in mind mine is a lab, smaller dogs may be different).

First few nights I slept next to the crate and let her out in the middle of the night to pee.

After a week, I let her pee at 11pm, then she is good to go in the crate until about 6am.

I put her in the crate if I can't be physically with her -- if I run to the store, or need a shower.
No longer than 3 hours.

I do not put any water in the crate. I sometimes give her a chew toy, sometimes a treat-dispensing toy.

Hope that helps and congratulations!!

Our only rule is that no matter what they have done, there is no punishing them in their crate.  If we're annoyed because a puppy peed all over the place, you can yell no no no and shake a finger in their face, but the second they run to their crate, it's over.  They don't get removed from a crate to be punished, ever.  The crate should be their happy calm place.
