Do I need to follow up?

My daughter was diagnosed with strep on Friday evening. She's taken all of her doses (so far -- she has a total of 10 days) of antibiotics and she's still in (she says "a lot" of) pain. Do I follow up today or tomorrow or wait a few more days?

My son has strep also and he's not complaining  of throat pain any longer but she had it first.

Just to compound the issue, I was diagnosed with bronchitis and pneumonia on Friday and my husband started throwing up this morning. <sigh>

The only healthy kid is getting an MRI tomorrow morning for a possible bulging disc.

I'd call and ask the doctor's office. They should know if some people stay in pain a long time or not. I recall a friend of mine (a nurse practitioner) saying that strep is a wimpy disease, inasmuch as once you start the meds it gets knocked out pretty quickly and you start to feel better pretty soon.

Everyone is different, of course, but since the meds are done and she still hurts, that might mean something isn't right. I'd call and ask them what they think. They should be able to say, "The pain usually lingers for x days so you're fine," or "Oh no, that shouldn't happen, bring her back in so we can check her out."

We went to urgent care so it isn't as easy to call. I also clarified where we are on the meds. (sorry about that)

Yes, I usually expect that the kids feel better within 24-48 hours which is why I'm getting a little concerned.

Thanks for your opinion. It helps.

I'm sorry you're all going through medical junk at the same time. That's so hard! My kids have had strep *many* times, all with various initial symptoms, sometimes fever, sometimes not, etc. However, the throat pain has always gone away within 24-48 hours after starting antibiotics. If I was in your position, I would definitely call the dr, or unfortunately make a return trip to urgent care.

Wow, you guys are going through a mess!  I pray you all recover quickly.

Yes, I would definitely call the doctor back if she is still hurting.

Many times a peritonsillar abscess will not respond to antibiotics alone. Yes, she needs to go back to the doctor to make sure nothing needs to be drained. Also, sometimes people can get a virus and bacteria at once. For example, mononucleosis and streptococcus will sometimes be present at the same time. Other ailments can also cause throat pain as well.

I'll keep that in mind. I did bring up mono to the doc and she didn't think that she had enough symptoms to do furhter testing but left it up to me. I took the wait and see approach.

She's feeling better although she still has some pain, it is manageable with Advil, which it wasn't before. I think the new antibiotics are working. The doc did say bring her back if she's still uncomfortable on Wednesday.

Thanks so much.

Was just googling this stuff today since dd has sore throat, and an 'f throat' came up. A bacteria most doctors miss thinking a sore throat is strep. It's not common, but anything is possible.

There's something out there on the web called Magic Mouthwash for sore throats.  You mix a teaspoon of Benedryl and Maalox together and gargle.  It's supposed to work well, I've not tried it.

Also, Honey tends to coat and soothe.

I heartily concur with all those above who have said to call the doctor back.  I hope EVERYONE in your house is better soon!

My daughter was still complaining of a sore throat, 7 days after she was first diagnosed, so I took her in to confirm the strep was gone and she's still positive for strep. She is  on a z-pack.

My son  seems to be fine. I think the Prednisone I have been on was keeping me awake because now that I'm off of it  I am really feeling tired.

Just a side note the strep can sometimes cause vomiting instead of sore throat so it may be worth checking your dh as well in case he has it?
