Prairie~Phlox
I have a son that just really needs more comprehension practice, he doesn't care to read, but I need him to work on it more for future testing. He's kind of between 8th & 9th grade right now. Suggestions?
...................
We tried them once and they were beyond useless. I would say instead to read aloud to him and encourage engagement. Sometimes ask questions, sometimes ask him to tell you what happened in his own words. Sometimes you explain the meaning of things. :)
Arcadia
Just for test prep purpose, my kids did Reading Detective followed by test prep using a few past years papers before the test. That takes up 10mins daily for reading detective and about 6hrs total for the past year papers. My kids reading comprehension section has always been the weakest portion for LA scores but the gap close steadily. My oldest is a strong reader but test prep helps him to pick the multiple choice answer the examiner wants instead of overthinking.
FriedClams
CLE Reading is a FABULOUS curriculum for building reading comp skills, as well as General testing skills. The books are easier than the workbooks so definitely don't skip up grade levels unless you have an advanced student.
jengjohnson
We've used CLE which is good, but Seton has 2 reading comprehension books that my 8th grader really liked and learned from. My daughters love to read though so I'm not sure how they would work for someone who isn't so into reading.
ElizabethB
This book approaches it from a different perspective and builds up the skills needed for it, I like it, you can look at the samples. If he needs to start at a lower level, they do not have grade on them, but this is the one designed for his age. http://classicalacademicpress.com/reasoning-reading-level-two/#.Vsy1s4hHarU
