Staceyshoe Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Does anyone have experience with these classes? I believe they are free online classes taught by volunteers. A few of the descriptions look very appealing--very similar to online classes I've seen for quite a bit of $$. Since my oldest is moving toward mostly online work, this is rather appealing. I'd love to hear about your experiences with this group.http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.org/ Quote

***** Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 My daughter did an Apologia on-your-own class when she was in middle school through the co-op. It is a legitimate group and a great idea, in my opinion. I wish we could have done things, via the co-op, but classes filled quickly. But we did like the on-your-own way it was set up. Students were given assignments. There were online tests that differed from the actual Apologia test. If you know anything about the actual test, students need to write their own answers, rather than a multiple choice. This is higher order thinking. But for my 1 daughter, this was a better way of doing tests, rather than writing out complete sentences. The grading was done for me, so that was very easy. The account is your own as you want to use. We were on our own, and the grade was there for us to do with what we wanted. I don't know if these types of classes are offered anymore, but I hope so, for other's sake. There were even classes I wanted to take, but didn't have the time! Now that I look at the site, things look different than a few years ago, so I am not sure how the system is set up. I had a question once and Tammy got back to me right away. I hope this helps. Check it out. They have been working every year to improve on things, so you know they are in the best interest of students. 1 Quote
Renai Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Yes. This is dd16's 2nd year using it and I'm a volunteer this year. Tammy's science classes are top-notch, and they opened up literature and foreign language conversation classes this year. It looks different because Moodle was upgraded. Many volunteers worked to transfer and retype classes from the old system to the new. There is also an fb group that is very active and helpful in answering questions. 1 Quote
