DS is close to finishing up Jacobs Algebra I and we will break for the summer most likely. I'm thinking to do AoPS Counting & Probability next for a little break. He's done really well with Algebra I for the most part but I think a small break might be good.

After AoPS C&P, do we do Algebra 2 next or Geometry? Seems to be mixed opinions. Or does it just not matter!

we planning on Geometry - mostly because DD want's to take the AMC10 next year and that includes Geom.    It hadn't really occurred to me that there was a choice, though - anyone skipped Geometry and gone on to Alg2?  Where there challenges with that?

My DS11 did intermediate algebra with intro to geometry.  DS10 did intro to algebra with intro to geometry.  Both did AMC10 and AMC12 this month for the fun of it. Algebra 2 does not have a prereq of Geometry.

I don't think students skip geometry, they just take it after algebra 2. I think most students take it like that so they can take the sat or act which has geometry in them after sophomore year.

We did bits and pieces of the AoPS intro books all sorts of out-of-order. Some we did concurrently, some we if there was a giant glitch and a book needed to be put on hold for awhile. In general, Ds just let himself pursue them as his interest lead him. Sometimes, he would hit material which I would explain that heneeded to go back to Algebra and continue before he could understand. He would and then be off again. They whole Intro series is so very connected that it really did not matter. He is blasting through Khan Academy right now and it has alieviated my fears of gaping holes everywhere.

It doesn't matter. Once you have the basic Algebraic methods for tackling problems, you can go in a number of different directions with math.

Now that we have a lot of a algebraic methods for tackling problems, we are going to be doing a full course on geometry before a full course on Algebra 1.

I plan to go straight through the algebra sequence once we start it in earnest.

I would look at the science sequence you plan to use. For instance, they recommend having Algebra II before doing AP Biology, if the science sequence isn't an

issue for you, then I'd let him pick.

DS is doing geometry next in case he wants to go to public high school. I figure it will be simpler to transfer his existing credits if they are in the same order as the public schools. It's all about keeping doors open at this point and not potentially setting him back because school standards.

Eta: Thinking about this more, I guess we could go straight into algebra 2 when he finishes 1 in the next month or so. If he worked through the summer, we could get through both algebra 2 (there would be no need to waste the first couple months on review as in the ps) and geometry before starting high school. But I'm not sure there's a point to doing that. It would difficult to convince the school to start him in calculus in grade 9, and leave him quickly without options at the high school for his final couple of years.

Depending on the district, there can be many options. There are both AP Calculus exams, AP Statistics, and often community college courses. I would be most worried about your son testing into calculus. Not because AoPS is lacking in anyway. Actually the opposite. I woukd be concerned that the format of many tests requires such a different set of skills than the problem solving that h might over-think.

DS also finished Algebra I young. We had quite a bit of flexibility because we decided not to load him up with structured English and History and that gave him more time to focus on math.

He used a tutor who suggested DS move on to Geometry after Algebra I. And at home, because we had the time, we started on AoPS Intro to Algebra alongside (DS's first Algebra I was with Dolciani). The AoPS supplementation was very good for him and since there was no set deadline to finish the book, we more or less took our time to help him solidify Algebra I. It has proved to be so helpful and am so glad we did it this way.

When he did Algebra II thereafter, his tutor also incorporated Trig and some Analytic Geometry and reviewed some of the Geometry concepts. In this way, DS had a nice, consistent review all along. Point being, with the homeschooling, you have flexibility to take a break if he needs it or add review if he needs it.

Our high school caps out at AP Calculus. CC is available, but perhaps not ideal. It's a long way out, at any rate.

He isn't doing AoPS, but overthinking is pretty much his life curse anyway. We are working on that. ;)

Why on earth? There is no algebra 2 used in AP Bio.

My son sat with his Highschool counselor last week, he's on the Honors/AP track in English, Math, History, Science, and Language.

He said he would need to take Algebra II before AP bio. From my understanding it has more to do with math 'maturity' and the understanding of certain concepts before taking AP bio, not necessarily that they would use it per say in Bio class. It made sense to me, then again he is my first going into HS so maybe it's just the way they do things here.

Algebra 2 is usually a co-req for AP Chem for all the logs and graphing and equation balancing and stuff.

Some colleges require a semester of college chem before intro college bio. I think this a more a matter of weeding out the weakest of the pre-meds, than a true pedagogical requirement regardless of what the departments claim :)

One *could* argue that a student needs Alg 2 to understand all of the chem in AP bio... I'm sure a stronger math and chem background makes that easier... but is hardly required. If a kid can handle everything else in AP Bio, picking up a little math and chem won't be an issue.
