If you have had a boy and girl sharing a room/bunk beds...

I think the midieval theme is cute for that. Dragons and knights and swords, with a few pink princesses tossed in as necessary. My nursery was jungle animals and jeweled tones, so I didn't have to switch it for my kids. In fact, they shared it for several years until dd wanted her own bedroom and we repurposed the playroom.

I've looked on Pinterest and seen shared room ideas, but nothing where the same bedding is used and is gender neutral. Everything is two separate beds with coordinating items. I just don't think that'll look as good on bunks as a nice, gender neutral option.

Their interests are so different. Well I guess she'd love dinosaurs, but I'm sure my dd would prefer she have SOME girly aspects to her bedroom. He's into dinos, dragons, trains and Star Wars and she loves princesses and horses. This is why we are struggling with ideas!!

We don't bother theming the rooms. We just use some vinyl wall decals by each bunk that suit each kid and have nice, yellow walls that work with all the bedspreads. I never bothered decorating a nursery either, it seemed like a waste. Something cozy but not too planned with decor that won't need a total overhaul every five years.

We have five kids in one room, which decreases flexibility just a bit compared to two ;)

We've had variations on these things.... It has been the most visually appealing when the beds and furniture were all white, and then we either used color and pattern on bedding or on wall art to show differentiation, or we chose all one very simple color scheme.  When everyone is crammed into one room, keeping things simple and light is key....white furniture, paler colors, etc.  Look at IKEA catalogs. :)

Totally failed on the color. Dd wanted espresso bunks because eventually her son and baby boy will share a room and dgd will have her own (right now they only have 2 bdrms), so she really wanted to get the darker beds. Dgd will get a new bed for herself when they sell this house and go a bit bigger.

We are definitely looking to lighten things by using lighter bedding, but still having something that will go either way.

I'll look at the links - thank you!

Have you seen the bunk beds with the false fronts that make them look like a castle? You can just disguise them and then stick dragons, horses, and princesses wherever you want. You can do it with wood, or even cloth curtains.

I obviously don't have a decoration gene. The walls are painted green because it's DS favorite color. They were painted purple for 10 years for DD. They each just pick out their own bedding. Nothing matches at all.

Hehe this is us. Top bunk has Spiderman, bottom has my little ponies, and the toddler bed has Thomas.

Well I can certainly appreciate the lack of decorating gene because I'm right there with ya. The reason we are wanting to do this at this time is because they are sharing a really small room, and we feel some sort of cohesiveness to the decorating will keep it from seeming tiny. Of course we could be totally off-base, and we have already messed up by the darker furniture (see - no real clue), but the decorating and organizing sure can't hurt.

Also because the room is so small, we got the most streamlined bunks we could find, and really can't do anything to bulk them up. I think we are working with about 11x10.

Right now, they have 2 toddler beds; one with Toy Story and one with Sophia (not either of their favorites, but they were given to them, so that's what they're working with. ;-p

We did a sea theme.  The wall paper was old fashioned/vintage anchor print, with a border all around of ship port holes.  We went to antique stores and bought cheap framed antique prints of ships and boats, and also framed a map that showed all the light houses of the Great Lakes, some of which we'd seen, and hung that on the wall as well.  The room colors were light blue and a very soft medium blue/gray and white.  The curtains were white.  Bedspreads were white chenille.  Furniture was a dark walnut color.

Our room was very small too!

My boys room is similar. They have a dresser we got for free. Mattresses on the floor. When we moved in we ripped out the carpet exposing the plywood floor.  Other than putting up a bookshelf my decorating involved giving them crayons and pencils and telling them to draw / write on the walls and floor. Eldest did pick out his own blanket when he was about 4, and still uses it. It is a Dora the Explorer blanket.

They are allowed to change things IF they go to a store and pick things out. But they like the current set up, and like that they can do as they please in their room.

My daughter and son shared a bedroom for a long time - 3 different houses.  We had light blue plaid quilts that matched on the beds and different colored sheets and pillows - pink for her, blue for him. The bunkbeds we have are painted sort of off white.  They can be up in bunkbeds or down in two twin beds.

When we lived in Hawaii and I found some really cute sea-themed quilts, one in blue one in pink.  We had fish paintings and a fish mobile.  That was cute for a while.

Then we moved again and stayed with the ocean theme for a while and I think we went back to the blue plaid.  I think.  I really can't remember.  I can visualize what their sisters had (yellow walls, yellow and teal quilts) but I can't remember the other room.  Light blue walls and ??

Those two (boy and girl) have been such good friends!  They loved sharing a room until my daughter turned 12.  Then she was ready for her own space, so she helped me clean out our "mud room" and make it into a bedroom.  She painted the walls and made art to decorate...  Fun!  They still have sleep overs in each other's room once in a while.

Mine were only in their room to sleep, and we didn't decorate. It was the gender neutral nursery. Each picked bedding. Done. :)

Well, dd's house is tiny, and the kids are in their room for any playing that isn't done outside, as well as sleeping. Both bedrooms are also pretty visible from the living room since the house is so small.

Can you tell me about or post a pic of your bunk bed bedding and/or room deco? I'm trying to help dd with decorating a very small room that dgs and dgd are sharing and we just need inspiration.

Thanks!

My brother and I shared a room for a year when we were little (not out of need, but because I wanted to).  The room was small.  There were the bunk beds, a desk and one dresser.  On the wall were Peanuts decorations.  They were felt pin ups of Snoopy and his dog house, Snoopy as the Red Baron, etc.... I had Disney Robin Hood sheets (remember? With the snake, lion, and fox :) ), I can't remember the comforter.  I'll need to go look for pictures.  I believe my brother had Star Wars. We had a Batman and Robin clock(it talked!), and a Snoopy telephone (My mom still has that phone and clock!)

After my brother died, and I had to go back to my own room (which was ALL pink), I hated it.  I still miss those Peanut decorations.

Honestly if that is small I would keep it neutral. Cute pillows and a cuddle blanket will personalize it enough. If they are looking to move soon, I would not go crazy personalizing the walls. I would go for simple.

When my kids had bunks they had little book shelves next to their bunk with their favorite books etc.. It was convient and personalized.

What about patchwork quilts in coordinating, but not matching colors? If they both have lots of white, but hers has pinks and flowers and his has some navy and baseballs or boats it could look cohesive and lighten up all the dark wood. Otherwise, just go with a solid comfortors? Maybe red and blue or purple and green?

I don't know how much you would like everything to match, but I just let each pick out their comforter and purchased plain color sheets(we lucked out on red being in both) that matched both comforters.  All furniture was the same wood set so that matched and I got a bookcase to match.  Otherwise, the kids each got a pack of their "favorite" thing wall decals so they could decorate the space above their head board.  The walls we painted a neutral cream/tan color and the wall decorations, we made bulletin board picture frames so their art work could be hung up.
