I have the 1988 printing, same book.  I haven't used it though, nor have I taught any algebra 2 to any of my kids yet, so I can't comment on content.  The later edition of this text is "The Classic" and is, or was, widely used.  Book 1 is algebra 1.  The format is along the lines of Prealgebra, An Accelerated Course.

Hmm... I was hoping for something more Dolciani than Brown.

We've been playing with the Book 1 of the older ones like this http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Algebra-Trigonometry-Structure-Method/dp/0395142563/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1455900428&sr=1-7&keywords=algebra+and+trigonometry+Dolciani

I thought if I could track down a TE it would make a nice reference, at least. I know that is likely to be time consuming, so I thought I look at some of the more widely available editions. Not especially a fan of the newest "Brown" ones, though.

You might pm Jane in NC and ask her your question.

I went ahead and bought it. Better World Books had a TE for $7, so I thought I'd take the risk. I hope I don't end up with an alarming collection of Algebra 2 books now that I've started to sell off the Algebra 1 and Geometry collections. :0)

This is an excellent text and I found it was easier to find the solutions manual for this edition. I'm on my 6th time through the Dolciani sequence and the 80's version is actually my favorite

What do you use for precalc?

What do you use for precalc?

I use the Dolciani Algebra II/Trig (Structure and Method book 2). Some of the girls have used the 90s version and others have use the 80s version. I let them choose since we have the solutions guide for both. If there is time, I have them use ALEKS prep for calculus to review/or intro the calculus topics before sending them to our (very good) community college for calc I.

That's not a real Precalc book.

For Dolciani look for something with Analysis in the title.

A student who completes the entire book is well prepared for calculus. I've had two students go directly into Calc I at the local college and earn 4.0 in the calculus sequence. My third daughter opted to take a Pre Calc course in college because she felt rusty.

In my time, my teacher did not have me do the entire Analysis book before Calc. A fair bit is review, so if one didnt short oneself in the earlier grades, one doesnt need to do the review.

Back in the 80s, my Catholic high school sequence was Dolciani for Algebra I, Brown for Geometry, Dolciani for Algebra II Trig, and then straight into Calculus. I think pushing Algebra I down to the 8th or even 7th grade for everyone necessitates a watering down and/or a lot of review.

Yeah... The solutions are running $180 right now (and I doubt the price is going to drop.) I wish the publisher would do a line of "classic" Dolciani reprints. In this era of print on demand, it seems feasible.

I know there is a lot of overlap between Alg 2 and PreCalc, with depth being the major difference.

What about this one as a follow up? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395551897?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_3&smid=A1G31V8EZLIGGE

Advanced Mathematics by Brown appears to be a popular replacement.  I am looking at that text right now for use with DS.

We had Honors Alg 1 (Dolciani) 9th,  Honors Geometry (?) 10th, Honors Alg2/trig (Dolciani) 11th and then PreCalc/Analysis for 12th grade semester one and Calculus for semester 2. This was before AP Calc became popular at public schools. Unfortunately I can't remember the text we used for 12th.

My son started Algebra 1 in 7th (B&M charter) - I would have preferred a Honors PreAlgebra course at the time with Honors Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

This another option for an alternative to using old Dolciani books (or in conjunction with them)

http://static.cemseprojects.org/smsg/

We're using the 1970 Dolciani Structure and Method without a TE or solutions manual.

The SMSG algebra book has good teacher explanations and solutions. I may sub a section or two of these when I run into something where I need full solutions.

There are also tests that may be useful to Dolciani users (although I haven't looked to see if there are solutions for those.)

I've been looking over the Dolciani sequence, and I don't think that all precalc is a waste. I know with the Foerster series you can skip some things in Alg 2 and cover them in PreCalc. To my untrained eye, the Brown precalc book does seem to cover some things in greater depth, but also seems to introduce some advanced topics that are covered later in the calculus sequence (please correct me if I'm wrong). Since it seems very likely my DC will pursue a math heavy program in college, I think it's likely she'll do precalc, even though she is a math strong student.

Schools in my current area dont offer Alg 1 to everyone in 7th or 8th...just the top students. The Alg 1 course not offered to top students is watered down, so precalc is not review for them. Top students typically skip pre-calc.

This is the case in our district as well. In our district the algebra and later books have suddenly shrunk to an alarmingly small size. They are softcover and say common core on the front. I haven't looked inside yet. I assume maybe they align with online content? Regardless, my older kids skipped precalc with mixed results, but none have gone pass Calc 2 in college, either.

In my area, all the high schools we are considering teach an honors precalc prior to AP calc.  Most of those teach an honors alg 2 that includes some trig and a regular alg 2 that may not include the trig.  If my ds13 goes to dd's school, the test to place out of alg 2 includes trig - their honors Alg 2 course uses the Dolciani text - so I'd need to teach him that before the April test (next year).  The first of the three trig chapters in Dolciani Alg 2 is material he has already covered in geometry (a common core text).

ETA, I think you could substitute any geometry you prefer in place of Jurgensen.  As for precalc, my dd's school uses a text by Demana.
