Coco_Clark
Somewhat related to my other post today... Does anyone have experience with Thames and Kosmos kits? I'm thinking specifically of getting the My First Chemestry set and My First Physics set but any input on the quality of the brand would be helpful. Jackie
I didn't do those ones, but we've done a few others. Quality is middle of the road - a bit better than Magic School Bus kits, if you're familiar with those. For elementary, I think the quality is perfectly appropriate; good enough to withstand use, not so excellent you're upset if something does get broken or lost. The science information in the guides is inconsistent in quality/depth. I'd say it is enough for the 1st-3rd grade you're talking about, but any higher than that level and I would plan on supplementing with videos or library books. Momto6inIN
I'm having my 6th grader do T&C Chem500 and Physics Discovery right now, if that helps you. She uses Mr. Q as her science curriculum and she likes the way he explains things, but she was getting bored with the experiments, so I'm having her do these kits instead. The guides give good directions on how to complete the demonstrations and they're interesting to her, but as the PP said, the science information is lacking.
Coco_Clark
I definitely plan on getting some general chemisty and physics encyclopedias, something along the lines of DK. And we use the library religiously, though their selection of science materials are fairly limited. Thanks for the input so far!
TriciaT
We used their space one, and it was fantastic- as in my daughter loved all the experiments, they all worked, the directions were easy to follow, and I did not have to provide anything except water. HomeAgain
We've used several of theirs. I detested the kits that came with Noeo, the Young Scientists' Club ones. They gave nothing to the student- open it up, it tells you what you're doing, why you're doing it, and what you'll see. All in the same two page spread. Yay? We switched to T&C and the format and quality was much better. They are still mostly demonstration kits (we have Lakeshore kits that are more exploratory), but it wasn't all bundled up neatly. Their robotics was a good introduction, and their Milestones Of Science was fantastic to go along with history.
Holly
I found Amazon reviews helpful. I was looking into their physics kits, and the reviews were better on some kits than others.
