JessReplanted Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Which edition is the "right" edition? 1988? I am double checking because the used TE is $50. :glare: Thanks! Quote
Haiku Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I used the 1985 version. I didn't have have a TE and found that, for the most part, I didn't need it. When we did run into areas where I couldn't adequately explain, we just found math videos online. Btw, I think Dolciani is an excellent text, but it is very challenging. I feel that my daughter was more challenged by Dolciani pre-a than she has been by Foerster Algebra. This does NOT mean Foerster is too easy, just that Docliani is VERY challenging (which is a good thing). 1 Quote
wapiti Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 (edited) The 1988 edition of Dolciani's Prealgebra, An Accelerated Course is a reprint of the 1985 version. (ETA, sometimes it is listed as 1987 on Amazon. Whatever, they're the same.) I agree with Tara that I don't think it's worth it to get the TE either. Not necessary. Student text has answers to odds and there are plenty of problems. Edited February 18, 2016 by wapiti 1 Quote

Student text has answers to odds and there are plenty of problems. This is the one we have. I got it for under $7 on Amazon about a year ago. We are actually using something else, but I'm keeping it on hand to add more as we go if needed. I'm appreciating having more than one math text in my home for each level. I had pulled it out just this week to look over it again. One of the first lessons in the first chapter has 24 problems just doing the odds. That is plenty, imo, without purchasing the TE. There is a lot to the book...I will say it feels a bit wonky trying to figure out how to schedule it, but that is probably just me. 1 Quote
Mrs Twain Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 You don't need the TE, but I really like using it. It has all the answers (not just the odd problems) as well as teaching points for each lesson. It also has two paths for teaching the course: a Core course path and an Enriched course path with different assignments for each. The TE has been great to use, and I am glad I bought it. I agree that Dolciani is a difficult course, especially when using the enriched course. My dh thinks it is at least Algebra 1/2. 1 Quote
ElizabethB Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I really love the older edition, it starts with set theory and ties everything together. I will check copyright date if you are interesed, it is either 70s or late 60s. 1 Quote

From reading the reviews, I thought this pre-algebra would be a step back, a way to focus on just algebra, and preparation for moving into algebra 1. Quote
Mrs Twain Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) If you get the TE and do the Core course schedule, it would not be as difficult. I think people who don't have a TE generally assign all the odd problems in each lesson which would include the A, B, and C problems. Some of the C problems are difficult for my dh to figure out, and he did an engineering degree! However the core course schedule spends more time on the basic concepts rather than the most difficult problems. Ths core course may be a good fit for you.
