crazyforlatin Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 (edited) Just curious. I can't decide among these choices: WHA Jurgensen Teaching Jurgensen on my own at our own pace (got the $$$ teacher guide) Teaching AoPS Geometry on my own for 12 months Signing up for WTMA AoPS Geometry for 34 weeks (which is exactly 10 weeks more than AoPS online). I don't know who the teacher is but she teaches history and math. I'm confused about that, but I trust that WTMA understands a student's proofs may not reflect the exact way provided by AoPS answer key and that it could still be correct, perhaps? wapiti Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 (edited) Jurgensen is a great text, clear and straightforward. If she will need to demonstrate two-column proofs to a school at some point, they're in Jurgensen. Even if you end up using AoPS, it's nice to keep Jurgensen on hand just in case you need an alternate explanation on occasion. But, AoPS Geometry is way more fun than Jurgensen and more fun than Intro to Alg. If your dd leans visual-spatial, I recommend AoPS :). I have no idea about the WTMA class. The AoPS online class is really challenging and as you and your dd seem particularly capable, I think you would be fine with the book at home and no class, working with your dd. If I could teach or tutor myself, like you seem able to do, I would go with AOPS, the live WTMA class (IME, taking an online Aops class is like teaching yourself, with extra problems). Because I cannot tutor or teach, we already signed up for Wilson Hill geometry. Quote
crazyforlatin Posted February 16, 2016 Author Posted February 16, 2016 It's not so much that I can teach geometry, it's just that I feel powerful and capable with AoPS teacher guides. The Jurgensen teacher guide is not too shabby, but definitely not like AoPS. WTMA just updated its AoPS page to state that students are expected to dedicate 90 minutes per day to math. Without an online class, math actually turns out to be the last thing we do each day. My one comfort in AoPS is that one hard problem could possibly be enough math for the day. Quote
